Quick question: Can I install a faster processor than my motherboard can take but only run it at the maxium the motherboard permits. E.g. fit a AMD CPU K6-2 / 500 but run it at 450 (100 x 4.5)?

Actually, the MOBO (TMC Socket 7 AI5VG+) does have a 5.5 setting but normally for use with 66 MHz but I recon I can work out the switch settings to have 100 x 5.5 to match a 550 processor. Would this work? (I PRESUMING the manual was written when the max processor available was 450)

Can you? Yes.
Will it work? You might never know till you try. 8-)
Will it hurt? I don't see how it could. Make sure the CPU fits exactly on the motherboard so that you do not bend any of the pins.

Many thanks for a very quick response.

I'm taking my old AT and thought I would give it an END of life resuscitation (it's already had various mid life updates while it was my old PC) and then hand it down to my wife for email and word processing.

I've acquired a new motherboard with K6-2 350 for a penny on eBay. Just about to power it up. If it works I'll then LOOK for a 450 or 550 processor on ebay and try it out.

Fits my eco model: repair, restore, recycle.
