Solve : Safe to Removing old cd drive and not replacie it??

Answer»

Compac Presario 6000 series, WINDOWS xp, 6 years old. Works very well
I banged the cd drive with my knee and now the drive door is very hard to close (or open.) I disabled the drive, as I still have an external cd/dvd player burner. Even with the drive disabled, the drive is still trying to do something, either open/close, etc and is making a annoying clicking sound.
Is is safe for the rest of the computer operations to simply open up the computer, following the directions for taking out the drive, unplugging what needs to be unplugged and not replacing it. Or how about just unplugging the things that are plugged in and leave the drive in place to keep the dust out?
WOULD so much love to hear some advice.
Oh, I don't want to invest any more money in this computer as hopefully I will be switching to a laptop when the who shebang GOES.
Thanks Disconnecting the IDE ribbon cable and power plug will do fine...
Leaving it in place to keep dust out was a good idea on your part.Yeah, it really shouldn't have an impact on the system itself. Some games might need to be reinstalled because they aren't smart ENOUGH to look in another CD drive for their disc. Alternatively, after disconnecting the old drive, you could set the external drive's letter to the same letter. This should stop programs from getting confused. You could take the external drive apart, and use that in your machine. Aw, bless your hearts for answering. I will give it a go. Thank you dearies.
