Answer» Here's a weird one for the super techs. I have had this problem intermittently for a couple of years now, where my mouse freezes within minutes of REBOOTING or goes completely schizo at any time. So far I have tried different mice, both PS/2 and USB, both optical and ball, and nothing seems to cure it permanently. It's not a cleanliness issue. I have the same issue across multiple computers over various builds including a P4 1.8GHZ and a P4 3GHz, with 2 different motherboards under the 3GHZ, 2 different hard drives, several different video cards, different RAM DEPENDING on the motherboard used, reformatted and reinstalled operating systems, and the only thing I can come up with is possible interference, but none of the mice were wireless, which helps limit that as a factor. Even different monitors and printers. I might have no problem at all for 2 months straight, then for a continuous week or 2, I might have complete nightmares trying to use my pc. So far the ONLY consistent factor across every setup has been windows XP and my 3.5" drive and speakers (drawing power via the monitor power jack), old CDRom, although there is also DVDRom that was used in the latest reinstall. Other than the XP, I can't relate it to any specific software installation either. Any ideas? I'm GOING mad here.I have never used the monitor power connector for any devices ... This may have nothing to do with your mouse issues however. What other electronic components are close to this machine ? ?other than items directly connected to it, like the cable modem, this pc is alone (electrically) in it's room. and different positions in the room have no affect too.I know I'm a voice in the wilderness but I feel that using words like "schizo" in that way is offensive to clients of MENTAL health services and people who work with them. It is as offensive as "spaz" or "spastic" for CLUMSY and "gay" for lame. A little sensitivity please!
At least it's not a PC mouseTo the politically correct contrex : I'm sorry if you are so easily offended, but schizo is precisely the correct description for my mouse's behaviour. It is acting as if it has multiple personalities. At the times that it "acts up", it goes from "personality 1" perfectly average mouse, to "personality 2" where the mouse and pointer "freeze", frequently in the first minute of the pc being rebooted, with only means of unfreezing being rebooting, to "personality 3" dragging the pointer across the screen in any direction at random, INCLUDING AGAINST THE DIRECTION THE MOUSE IS BEING MOVED IN, until it locks itself into any corner of the screen, where it will then wait a sec before allowing itself to be moved away, and "personality 4" where the pointer leaps agitatedly around the screen, clicking at random, creating new icons on the desktop, deleting things, opening files, etc, in which state rapid and repeated use of the "esc" key calms it down. Understand? Is this computer on a network or is it stand alone? Does it happen in safe mode? Does it happen while not connected to the internet? Has anyone else ever had access to this computer?Quote from: kraymer on August 24, 2007, 04:04:06 PM To the politically correct contrex :

Understand?
Yes, I "understand". I understand the kind of person you are. If you were here in person, by now you'd be regretting that tone of voice, sonny. I mean really regretting it.
