Solve : Should I get more memory or a better graphics card first??

Answer»

Jess07, I forgot to ask... do I need to disable my old graphics card first? Or can I just plug in the new card and my computer should recognize it?

ATI Xpress200's an integrated graphics card (built into motherboard).Quote from: elxr06 on September 19, 2007, 03:09:34 PM

Not only that, but you also have to relocate the Monitor cable from being attached to the Onboard GPU, to being attached to the new card.
Disabling it in the BIOS couldn't be easier.Quote from: linuxlover on September 19, 2007, 02:45:57 PM
I say more RAM. Track would say GPU if he was here.

Then "Track" is smarter than you Quote from: Jess607 on September 19, 2007, 03:17:38 PM

Or can I just log onto windows normally and then go to device manager and disable it that way? Then shutdown computer and nstall new GPU before rebooting and installing any necessary drivers if any? Quote from: elxr06 on September 19, 2007, 03:30:36 PM

No, you have to disable it in the BIOS. It's much easier than what you proposed in any case.Where in the BIOS do you disable the onboard graphics? My computer has phoenix bios and nowhere do I see the options for enabling/disabling onboard graphics. I only see something that says tells me that I have 64mb of my 76mb ddr ram that is diverted to the graphics card.

I read you can just go to safe mode, uninstall integrated graphics card drivers in device manager... then shutdown, plug in new card, reboot and install as usual. OR for certain systems, I can simply plug in new card and the integrated graphics card will be automatically disabled UPON reboot.

Or how to get the bios thing to WORK, as I don't see where you can disable/enable onboard graphics card if that is the only way it works?

all bios are DIFFERENT, but typicall you can find it under integrated periphials or something like that. it will be a enable / disable type button. Dig through your biosThere is a place I can enable/disable onboard audio but that is all I see. But if disabling through windows works, then my problem is solved.you cant disable it through windows, its part of your motherboard and must be disabled there. Although, I never had any problems not disabling my on board vid card when I put in a better one, I just left it for a while and it worked fineQuote from: Jess607 on September 19, 2007, 03:18:34 PM

1GB of RAM is becoming more and more essential these days. I can do all the "cool" stuff because of it. True that I have a good GPU, but I was buying the whole system.True that 1 gb of ram seems to be the new ram size minimum these days.

SAPPHIRE 100218L Radeon HD 2600XT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

Is that card I listed a good buy at the $125.99 plus $5.84 3 day shipping as listed? How does this card compare to NVidia 8800 (any kind), NVidia 8600 (Any kind), ATI X1950 and ATI X1950 pro in terms of price and performance? HD2600XT I heard somewhere it is good card, except it lacks shaders.....which makes it a problem........
