Solve : Should this do??

Answer»

I'm new to this site and green as grass as far as computers go. Last November I purchased a new unit for my son (for gaming) and I hoped it would do him. Lately he never turns it on. Says it is too slow. This is the stats
p4 3.2C-800/Asus P4P800/Kingston DDR400 hyperx 1GB/ Sata 160gb 7200 seagate/ pioneer 16x dvd/ Creative Audigy II/ ATI 9800 PRO XT 256mb/ Logitech Z-680 5.1 speakers. As well it has the Logitech mx700 mouse and keyboard and 19" monitor. Is this a decent unit or is my son telling the TRUTH? If he is, what can I do to make it more usable? Thanks for any input. :-/Sounds like an excellent system to me. If it is running slow it probably needs a garbage cleanup - virus/trojan scan, spyware scan, dump the temp files, defrag, etc. Thanks 2k-- I had thought of that already so I went and defrag'd, cleaned up some old files, and checked his hard drive space. He still has 118 gig free so??? He says halo and Midnight club run slow. Should I maybe take the unit back in to see if all settings are right on the video card and motherboard. I am willing to invest in another 3 gig of ram if it will help. Run the spyware and trojan scans. This kind of stuff can absolutely demolish system resources and bring the fastest computer to its knees. We will run those tonight. Thanks 2k. Oh just so you have more info, he ran a program called 3DMARK? last week. Why does it show his computer having 2 cpu's? Is there anything on this 6 page systeminfo Explorer I should look for to explain if something is wrong? I can email the papers to anyone that can understand them. The two CPU's are the result of hyperthreading. It can be turned off, and probably should be be for gaming. It is a virtual CPU. It fools the OS into thinking there are two when there is only one. It can be useful for multi tasking and handling background tasks but can slow things down for processor intensive tasks. The average home user would never notice the difference. Also, notice what is loading at startup. Any nonessential programs should be disabled. They can ALWAYS be started from the Start Menu or a shortcut and closed when not in use. He'll need to better maintain his PC..

Do these things on a regular basis:

  • Scan for viruses, trojans and spyware
  • defragment harddrives/partitions
  • Clean registry
  • uninstall programs no longer used
  • remove redundant files
  • Remove dust inside case

That should keep it running properly.customarlin_67.....Your son is fortunate to have a system like that.....A lot of people out there would love to have a pc with that much power....but as has been posted here already .......upkeep and regular service is what keeps it working properly. What happens to your car if you don't maintain it .......it doesn't run properly.
In addition to a good Anti virus ......you should regularly run programs like Ad-Aware ( to clean out the junk)

SpyBot Search and DESTROY.....

system mechanic pro
http://www.topdownloads.net/software/view.php?id=12544

The last link is a fully operational evaluation copy with a free licence for 30 days....( excellant program )

I would D/l and scan with all of the above.
just a note of caution ....when using system mechanic pro ....dont use the remove duplicate files function until you understand how it works.

You could install some additional ram and it may make the games you mentioned run a bit smoother but I do not see that as a priority item ...the games will usually say how much ram they require .
And you can tell your son for me that if he cant be bothered to look after the great pc you bought him .......pack it up and send it to me .....lol
Does you son download music from Kazaa , because that program is terrible for clogging up a computer ......

let us know how you make out.

Well, dropped hard drive off on my way to work this morning and told the techs to do a complete clean and check on the unit. Picked it up on the way home. Good news was no virus's or worms. needed to be cleaned (dusty) but past that they said no problems. It runs as fast as when they built it. they seemed impressed with it back when they built it and still say it's fast. $175.00 down the drain to confirm what I ws thinking. Lost interest in it. Would rather play games on PS2. So I guess I have an expensive dust collector. Thanks for all your help. This is a great site. Has helped me a lot. Wonder if I can get a fair dollar for this unit? Remember I live in Canada so stuff is much more expensive. This unit cost me $3800 to build in November. Think I can get 1/2 with all games and extras? (joystick, gamepad, about 80 games and programs, printer, etc) customarlin_67.....I'm in Canada as well so I know about prices .....check out this site below and look at some of the pricing.......and then set your price.

It's a shame you had to spend $175.00 to find out what you suspected and was confirmed here . You have a awesome pc .....perhaps you should just hang on to it for your own use . You might consider E bay ......

Hope this helps.
dl65   Thanks dl65. Just looked at that site. Their most expensive one is close to our unit. They want $1985.00 without monitor or accessories. LOWER value keyboard and mouse and low end speakers. I think I may throw it on ebay with complete description (gave only partial description here) and list all programs as well. I really appreciate all the input you all gave me. Live and learn eh?
