Solve : Sound Card pci? pcie?? |

Answer» Ok, first off I'm not completely new to computers but the HARDWARE is still a place where I lack knowledge. I have a rookie question. I would like to purchase a new sound card but I am unsure if I need pci or pci express. How do I figure out what I have? I currently have a video card that is listed as a C-Media sound DEVICE. Can anyone give me a clue? ... I currently have a video card that is listed as a C-Media sound device...That's not your video card, that's your onboard sound. Why do you need a new sound card? I suspect you only need drivers for the C-Media.*censored* typo, meant my sound card. I would like a better sound card, like one with surround sound and not just this stock pos. Just want to know what I can buy?Look at page 2-12 of the link you provided. 8-channel audio not good enough for you? If not, PCI interface is the one you want. PCI-e x 16 is where your graphics card resides. PCI-e x 1 is usually for Gigabit ethernet, but maybe some sound cards, too. See p. 2-20. higher end sound cards are AVAILABLE for PCI-E. heck, any peripheral you can get for PCI is available in PCI-E nowadays.It is very important to know what you want to do with your soundcard.If you want to run a high-end D.A.W.or just want a good(surround-)sound.Do you want a INTERNAL or external card.AND most important,WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET ?
