Solve : Sound doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have a IBM R50e Laptop and the sound does not appear to work.  I can get IBM low battery sounds (in other words BIOS system sounds) but not windows system sounds.
I only seem to have these in the Sound, video and GAME controllers section

  • Audio Codecs
  • Legacy Audio DRIVERS
  • Legacy Video capture Devices
  • Media Control Devices
  • Video Codecs
I only seem to have those, none others.  When Itry and install the drivers from the Lenovo Website it says I cannot find the device.  I then found that I could not enable the Audio in the ThinkPad Configuration because somehow the device drivers were not installed correctly even though I cannot install anything!  No hardware appears in the sound, video and game controllers that looks wrong.

Any help on how to get my sound back would be great.Did the sound ever work?Um not sure, I was given this laptop less than 2 weeks ago.  I thought it worked but I can't say yes or no.  The speaker it self works because I can here lke BIOS sounds out of it and when I switch the volume up and down (from the R50e's) buttons near the on/off BUTTON I can hear beeps getting louder/softer.  So I know it works.  Just dont know why windows can't detect it.Click start then run and type devmgmt.msc and press ENTER. This will open device manager. In device manager do you see any yellow question marks or exclamation points or red Xs? No nothing at all.  They are all absolutely fine with none of the sections expanding. How about checking your Sounds and Audio devices defaults and volume control under Control Panel? The speakers you mention are external speakers right...?no they are not external sorry, they are internal laptop speakers.  the external headphones do not work either, only for system sounds like low battery (BIOS i think) not windows operating sounds. but not windows system sounds
Do you mean no windows default start-up and shutdown sounds?
Or to any other audio sounds such as music?

Yes no windows sounds or any other windows played audio.Yes no windows sounds or any other windows played audio
Let's be clear about this... Do you mean only windows default sounds and not when playing or listening to any KIND of music such as a CD audio on your CD/DVD drive?
OR both?
Okay I can only hear IBM BIOS Sounds,  for example when the battery is extremely low it will beep high-low-high-low (any of you with a IBM laptop will know this).  When I start the computer and quickly (before it can get to the Windows XP Boot screen) switch it off again, it makes a highish noise short beep before going blank(Off).  It will not play any sounds generated by the operating system eg a dvd playing (this cannot work as it says there is no driver installed) and will not play the start up and shut down tunes.  Check out this site for your laptop's driver support : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55042.html

Refer only to the Audio driver with OS win xp, 2000 for your R50e laptop. Let's see what gives. Thanks so much for your help so far, but unfortunately I downloaded and started the setup only to find that it could not find the driver and to reboot and try again, I did this 3 times and still to no avail.  What can I do?  What is preventing my windows operating system (XP) from recognising the device when it can make clear system (ie BIOS) noises? It might be here --> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-fixing-common-sound-problems
