Solve : Stroking The Chicken Singapore Style?

Answer»

The Mixed Reality Lab at the NATIONAL University of Singapore has come up with a weird telepresence rig which allows you to touch chickens over the Internet. The user strokes a chicken (no jokes, please) doll in the lab and embedded touch sensors translate and send the touch location information over the NET to a LIVE chicken wearing a "lightweight jacket" outfitted with small vibrating motors.

The researchers say the technology COULD be used for things like allowing kids with severe allergies to pet animals at a distance.

I seem to remember this making news about a year ago, did they get any further with it yet?Thats so cool, I could pet my dog from the other room
Of course I would never let her wear that vibrating coat thing.

It's a really neat idea, but no matter how realistic it MIGHT feel, they're still petting a toy. Quote from: CBMatt on June 04, 2007, 12:54:51 PM

Use your imagination. Can't you see one BIG application of this technology?

...

Well, I can see some use, but hardly any for this...

Then again, who knows what it can be morphed into. I don't mean that people will pay to pet a toy, rather that they will pay to be the toy. This idea seems to come up every few years, there was a kind of glove thing a few years ago.
