Answer» i installed an ole quantum fireball AS40.0 7200rpm 2mb BUFFER, 40 gig. my system seems to have slowed down quite a bit, could the 2mb buffer be limiting the 8mb buffer of my PRIMARY drive? primary is a seagate barricuda ST180013A 80gig, 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer.No but there could be other problems - not jumpered correctly (is it running OK?), inadequate power supply, hard drive problems, etc. Have you run some diagnostics on it from the Maxtor site? (They bought quantum some time ago. I think it was 2000. That may be ONE of the last drives made under that name.) The AS40 had an ATA-100 RATE LIKE your Seagate has.There was some software to control this. Check on the Maxtor site or do a google search.
