Solve the following for x, where |x| is modulus function, [x] is the greatest integer function, {x} is a fractional part function. [x]2 – 5 [x] + 6 = 0

Answer»

[x]² – 5[x] + 6 = 0

∴ ([x] – 3)([x] – 2) = 0

∴ [x] = 3 or 2

If [x] = 2, then 2 ≤ x < 3

If [x] = 3, then 3 ≤ x < 4

∴ Solution set = [2, 4)
