Solve : the sound card went kaput?

Answer»

Help. My sound card went kaput. So I guess I NEED to install a new sound card, right? Are all sound cards standard or do they vary according to computer?

And once I install the sound card , do I need to reinstall the AUDIO drivers?
What do you MEAN your sound card went kaput? We might be able to help you fix it, if you want.sorry, i meant my sound card got fried. yesterday, while I was surfing the web, I smelt a little burning smell, and the audio went silent. now when I boot up the computer, I get a pop up that says sound card is not available.

so can i just get a new sound card and put it in my computer? Or are sound cards dependant on the computer brand or TYPE? If I can put any sound card in, then after I do, do I just reload the drivers to make the sound card work properly?
Not an expert here but I think there are some differences between different cards and motherboards

What Motherboard do you have now?

Also, I've MOVED this to the Computer Hardware Section.Quote from: shashgo on August 08, 2008, 11:05:06 PM

Sound cards are not dependent on the computer brand. Make sure that you have an open PCI slot (probably don't want to use the slot the old card was in in case it's damaged), install the card and drivers and you're good to go.

There is a presumption here that the problem is the sound card and not the motherboard.

Post back if you need the procedure to install the sound card.
