Solve : thinking about 2 new processors? |
|
Answer» I am wondering, did they make the intel Xeon processor in multiple slot types? And how would I go about finding out what type of processor slot I have? under device manager under computer it says I have a "ACPI multi-processor PC" does this reference the motherboard in any way? under processors on device manager all it says is Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.4GHz four timesIt's a Quad Core CPU. It's a Quad Core CPU. It's a dual core with hyperthreading (each cpu appears as 2 virtual cpus). See his other post. To tell the socket type we need to know the motherboard make and model. Gotcha...thanx for the clarification.ok using EVEREST my motherboard shows up as Supermicro P4DC6 Quote from: wizard0ne0 on June 20, 2010, 05:53:06 PM ...using EVEREST my motherboard shows up as Supermicro P4DC6...SuperMicro http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/860/P4DC6.cfm Xeon; Socket 603 http://www.cpu-world.com/info/Intel/Intel_Xeon.htmldarn, I guess since the board won't allow anything PAST 2.4ghz there is no room to upgrade. Some of the Socket 603's go to 3.0GHz, hardly worth the upgrade. http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%203%20GHz%20-%20RN80532KC080512%20%28BX80532KC3000D%20-%20BX80532KC3000DU%29.html Quote from: wizard0ne0 on June 20, 2010, 06:03:27 PM darn, I guess since the board won't allow anything past 2.4ghz there is no room to upgrade.Found you a pair, cheap! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260618514670&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXF%3F&GUID=0905b4f51280a0e204e6cc16ffa425ae&itemid=260618514670&ff4=263602_263622• Dual mPGA603 ZIF Sockets • Supports up to two Intel® Xeon® processor(s) with 512KB of integrated Advanced Transfer Cache up to 2.4GHz<<Quote from: wizard0ne0 on June 20, 2010, 06:20:10 PM • Dual mPGA603 ZIF SocketsYou have to read the specs very carefully and understand what they mean. 2.4Gz was LIKELY the fastest available at the time board was manufactured. Important Specs Socket 603 Bus Speed - 400MHz Bus Freq. - 100Mhz 3.0GHz cpu meets these specs. study the chart of Xeon cpu's Clock multiplier is in the cpu, yours is 24, this one is 30. Both have bus freq of 100MHz Only difference TDP (watts), 65 to 85 I'm pretty sure this is yours, but you will have to verify. How much of a performance bump do you think I could reasonably expect? Would I have to into my system bios and change the input voltage on my cpu?Quote from: wizard0ne0 on June 20, 2010, 06:39:00 PM looks like you got me nailed lol, just checked my proccessor stats on EVEREST and everything is exactly what you posted. How much of a performance bump do you think I could reasonably expect? Would I have to into my system bios and change the input voltage on my cpu?Your's is unique, the only 2.4GHz 25% increase in cpu speed should be noticeable, hard to predict performance that is noticeable. Vcore is 1.5V for both, but not sure why you ask about input voltage; are you overclocking now? Don't forget, you will also generating 25% more heat. Hope your cpu & case fans are good. I'm surprised to find a pair for $27, Xeons's are the most expensive because production volumes were low compared to all the others.I am not currently overclocking, although I have considered it in the past, and my temps have never gone past 55 degrees centigrade(I average about 40), so I think that heat would not be a major issue at the current time. |
