Methinks Geek has found his tips on a UK site. Premium Bonds are a kind of savings lottery program run by the UK Government. You purchase "bonds" in units of one hundred UK pounds, maximum holding £30,000 for one individual, and one month after purchase they become eligible for a monthly draw, with prizes ranging from 50 pounds to 1 million pounds. The difference from ordinary lotteries is that you are not risking the purchase price of the bonds, only the interest you would have got if you had invested the money in a regular savings account. You can cash them in at any time. Prizes are exempt from UK income tax. Possible drawbacks for non-UK residents are that (1) participation in the Premium Bond program is designed for taxpayers in the United Kingdom. If you live outside the U.K., you will need to draw funds from a U.K. financial institution. (2) You may not apply for bonds online from any country, state or territory where participation in online lotteries is prohibited. Winning is not guaranteed, although people say that if you hold the maximum permitted you stand to get around 2% per year back in small prizes (The prize fund each month is determined by the current interest rates)
