Solve : toasted mobo??

Answer»

Ok, here is my situation.....

Had windows XP comp. It was an Emachine Etower series i believe, more info on it later including exact specs.
XP died, some problem with the desktop tool bar not showing up nor icons, normal remedies tried and no success.
Tried to install Freespire, a free version of linspire that is completely legal.
Freespire Live from CD worked, after install was completed and i was instructed to remove the CD, screen goes black.

this has been the way it has been ever since. On boot, it will post and then revert to black. It will not boot from CD. Cleared CMOS, as suggested earlier here under the guise of a different problem, didnt have any effect.

CD drive OPENS properly, so i have no reason to believe that it is the problem. After trying an in-the-case no frills rebuild of it, no success. I know it is one of maybe 5 component,  in my opion, that are most likely to have failed: Mobo, HD, Proc, RAM, CD drive

any help?

[email protected]First thing would be Power supply then move on to others.Obviously Freespire did not kill it, so what was the problem that Windows bit the dust?

More info including the make, wattage and age of the PSU would be helpful.trapper
I excluded power supply because no physical upgrade was done at any point during the timeframe that the computer died. It was not that old, i got it 3 years ago at one of those sales.

The power supply is not included with the system specs, below, because it was a generic emachine, not a home made build, so i would have little knowledge of the power supply company emachine uses. Ill look though...

EDIT: The power supply is a Bestec 250W.

eMachines are notorious for poor power supplies that frequently take out other components when they fail. I hope this did not happen with you, but your first step would be to install a known working power supply of at least 300 watts and see if the MACHINE POWERS up.

If you decide to buy a new power supply, don't get one of those $10.99 "el cheapos" or you will be back here soon posting other problems.  lol, if that was the case, i was planning to buy a solid 500w PS that i could reuse in a different build if it turns out that this thing is truly fried.

Thanks for the advice
[email protected]Make sure you have appropriate connectors for the old and the new boards.

Solid for me=Antec, but others are good also. You can often judge quality by the price and the weight. More is generally better, but use a quality brand nonetheless.
