Answer» I am building a new -"old" computer, Tyan S2665 Dual Xeon. On this mother board there is only one (1) connection for the USB port. 2x 5 headers. But on the back panel there are 4 USB ports.
The CASE I got is the CoolerMaster Stacker and that comes with six (6) USB ports and I have a card reader that uses the same USB connector on the MB, for a total of 4 female connectors. I know I don't need all 7 USB ports, but I do need 2 and the card reader. Does anyone make an adapter for this?? Maybe SOMETHING of a "Y" from the 2x 5 header to the two USB connectors. It would be tooooo much of a PITA to use the rear USB's having to pull the PC in/out everytime I needed another USB port.
I had some time and made one up from perf board, some headers and lot's of small hard wiring and realized that the cable from the USB ports are shielded and grounded and my little adapter I made is not. So maybe my little adapter board would cause too much interference in the case. I don't know, not an EE so that's why I'm asking. I'm at WORK but will load up pic's when I get home, later on.The easiest solution would be an ADD on PCI/USB card that will give you an additional 2, 4 or 6 USB ports. They also come as a combo USB/Firewire card if you are anticipating having any Firewire devices down the road.
About 20 to 30 Bucks at any computer store...I already have 4 USB ports on the back of the MB, so another PCI/USB card would not work for me.
This is on the MB - just enough for one (1) female connector
These are to the front panel of the case and the other is to the card reader
The front of the case
I made this, but not sure if the interference would be too bad or not, since the USB cables are grounded and shielded.
