Solve : USB ports stopped working?

Answer»

W2K Pro w/SP4, P3 dual processors. Wife plugged camera into front USB port, locked up PC, now all devices (scanner and camera) off and no USB front or back.

Checked System Device MGR and USB Root and VIA MB USB drivers - indicated working properly, acted like it wasn't connected so I changed cables. Re set CMOS on MB jumper. Went into safe mode and uninstalled USB Root and VIA USB. On reboot it found hardware and reinstalled, still no USB.

E mailed Tyan MB vendor. I had updated the BIOS which did have a USB slow ISSUE. Considering uninstalling the VIA USB drivers and reloading clean copies, then re flashing the BIOS.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PaulWhat kind of camera did she plug in? I take it the drivers weren't loaded yet? So now when you say it's dead... Did you test just the scanner in all ports? Does it recognize anything at all? any devices in manager? But it says all is OK?

Camera is a Fuji and drivers were already installed so when you plugged the USB port in and turned the camera on to send it automatically brought up the application.

when I went into control panel, SCANNERS and cameras, neither the scanner nor camera were listed as they had been before.

i checked the front USB ports plug into the MB and it reads like its correct. Trying to reload the scanner, it can't find the device. Thats when I checked the USB devices which say their working fine.Quote

Does this mean the camera is working in the front? Or just that the front ports are recognized in device manager? No, neither front nor back USB ports are working, although the back ports were working fine.

Both the scanner and camera were previously listed in device manager but now are not and I can't get the driver software to find them, nor will Windows on start up. I've tried the VARIOUS plug in routines without any success. Its like they aren't connected. Yet when I check System and the USB ports they all check fine-working properlyHi,
Sadly i had the same problem with my Computer too, Only differance i'm running XP Pro and your running Win2K pro.

Try this and see if this resolves the problem.

Double Click My Computer,
Open Control Pannel,
Double Click System,
Click the Hardware tab
Click Device Manager
when it loads the list of devices then you need to
Press the + next to the one labled Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
for **ALL** of the ones labled Exacually 'USB Root Hub'
Right Click and select Properties,
Click Power Management,
Untick 'Allow the computer turn off this device to save power.'
Click Apply,
Click OK.

Remember repeat this for all USB Root Hub's in the list.
This MANAGED to solve the same problem i had with my USB ports...Hope it helps.
