Answer» Alright, I know this question is a little off the wall...
I need a PSU for my ATV winch for a project I'm WORKING on. Everywhere I look, PSU prices are ridiculous. I THOUGHT, why not a computer PSU? They're cheap. I can get a Athenatec 400W PSU at Radio Scrap for $30, http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2262708&cp=&origkw=power+supply&kw=power+supply&parentPage=search.
The specs for the winch are 10A, 12V, which works out to about 100w (P=VI). The winch will only be operated a couple times a week. The 400W spec is probably peak, so I should more than covered. As long as I correct for the wire gauge, is there any reason this wouldn't work? See if you can get a PSU made for the OLDER AT motherboards rather than the ATX motherboards. The AT power supply units had a mechanical switch to turn them on and did not rely on the signal from the motherboard to power up.
Thanks for the tip. I forgot I had an old one sitting in the basement
Would it be CONSIDERED a switching PSU? Would that be of a concern?
