Solve : Using External HDD For PS3 and PC Backup?

Answer»

Is it possible to use an external hard drive to back up both PC and PS3 files? The PS3 files are in FAT32 FORMAT, and I know you have to reformat the hard drive from NTFS to FAT32. So is it possible to have a portion of the hard drive in FAT32 while having the rest of it in NTFS so that I can back up my PC files? The hard drive is a Seagate 320 GB.Why can't you back up all with FAT32 on the external hard drive?I'm going to sound like a noob when I ask this but, will the PC files work properly in a FAT32 format? If so, what method would I use to partition one section specifically for the PS3 files?Quote from: Lizard1380 on June 17, 2010, 05:19:51 PM

1. I'm going to sound like a noob when I ask this but, will the PC files work properly in a FAT32 format?
2. If so, what method would I use to partition one section specifically for the PS3 files?
1. Yes. But FILE size is limited to 4GB.
2. I know nothing about PS3 files. You could partition the external drive but I don't know if partitioned DRIVES are compatible with PS3.I will try to see if I can find anything about partitioned drives and PS3 compatibility. I found this webpage that might help:
http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/138288/7200rpm-vs-5400rpm-does-ps3-hard-drive-speed-matter/
Most of it is explaining something off topic, but if you scroll down to the bottom under the 12 steps it says that you can have up to 30 GB in FAT32 and the rest of the hard drive can be something else. That was the only thing that I found helpful in that article.Your answer is:
8. Only allocate 30GB for the partition, or this will not work.
This says the same thing: http://www.ps3pad.com/ps3-help-guides/2008/03/16/how-to-add-an-external-usb-hard-drive-to-the-ps3/
This may be a limitation of PS3 but is not a limitation of Windows or FAT32, so these help sites are wrong when they say: "...Windows can only format FAT32 drives up to 32Gb.". Windows will format a FAT32 volume up to 2TB.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table
http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm
Follow the instructions to create a 30GB partition on the 320GB Ext HDD.
You can resize and change from FAT32 to NTFS at any time without loss of data with this:
http://www.partition-tool.com/
In FACT, you can create with this free tool, too.

The confusion is due to this: "The Windows 2000/XP installation PROGRAM and filesystem creation tool imposes a limitation of 32 GB. However, both systems can read and write to FAT32 file systems of any size (up to 2TB)"Ok. I believe I have sorted everything out. I used disk manager to shrink the E: drive by 30 GB, and then formatted the new partition (F:) drive to FAT32. The PS3 had no problems detecting the partition, it's just that I did not have enough space. So I went back to disk manager, shrunk the E: drive by 20 GB and deleted the F: drive which left 50 GB of unpartitioned space. When I tried to format the new partition, the FAT32 option was not available. So I reformatted it to NTFS. So then I used this program called fat32format 1.05 and was able to format the F: drive through cmd, and reformated all 50 GB to FAT32 with no problem. And now I have my PC backed up to the E: drive and my ps3 is currently backing up to F: drive.

The reason I did not use http://www.partition-tool.com/ is because when I tried to install it, there was some kind of conflict with the license agreement.

So problem solved. Thanks very much for taking the time to help.
