Solve : Video Card Porblem.?

I have a gateway pc running windows XP home. Yesterday we connected a cannon printer and the screen went black. I could use logmein and see the screen; only it looked like the video was corrupt. In the control panel the settings were 999999x999999 for video resolution. There were no other settings to be able to change it to.
This happened SEVERAL MONTHS ago and I was able to do a system restore to a prior date and get it back. When this happened it was a scanner that was plugged in.
Anyone GOT any IDEA on how to KEEP this from happening again aside from installing a new video card or should I just do that?
Were both peripherals USB / plugged into the same port? If so it sounds like you have a short in that port. Sounds like a poem, doesn't it?
