Solve : Video settings.?

Answer»

Hi, first off if I posted this in the wrong section I'm sorry.

Well here is my problem, I recieved my computer from a friend already set up, I just plugged it in and went without touching any settings. I had a some problems so I had to re-install Vista, everything when fine, I've been using it with no problems for a few weeks now.

I play online games and ever since I installed Vista again I get very low frames per second. Before I would get around 20-30 fps now I never get above 8 fps on any game I play. I don't understand what is wrong, except maybe some settings are wrong with my monitor or video card, since I don't know much about such settings I thought I would ask others that might know more, you.

So I'm not sure what info I should give, so I'll try to list what I can and if more is needed please ask.

Monitor-
Name brand: Sony
Model #: SDM-HS9FP
Also says on the back "TFT LCD Color Computer Display

If I right-click the desktop and go to personalize it list
1. (Default monitor) on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
2. (Default monitor) on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Then if I click on Advanved settings and go to monitor tab it says
Monitor Type: Default monitor and Screen refresh rate is set to 60 Hertz, I can't select the Properties button.
Not sure what else to list.

Video card-
Type: NVIDIA GeForse 8800 GTW
If I try to "Update driver" through device manager and let it look for drivers on my computer/internet it says it has the most recent driver.
Again, I don't know what else to put.

I know this isn't alot of info but I'm not sure what else to put, just ask if you need anything,

Thanks for any help.
Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and download the driver. Specifically, you need the driver at http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_191.07_whql.html, assuming your version of Vista is 32 bit.I have the specific driver already, doesn't help any unfortunately. Thank you for the reply though, if anyone else has any IDEAS I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks.Anyone else may have an idea? What did you use to reinstall Vista (recovery partition, recovery/restore DVD, Microsoft Retail Install DVD, OEM Install DVD) ?

Basically, I'm wondering whether you need to reinstall the motherboard chipset and onboard device drivers.

I'm not a "gamer" so I'm not up to date on video card technology; however, why the different designations for the video card: "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS" and "NVIDIA GeForse 8800 GTW" ?Quote from: dahlarbear on October 22, 2009, 04:23:55 AM

Let me try to explain everything from the start.
I recieved the used computer from a friend, it worked fine for awhile but I got a key logger >< (stupid me). Anyways, I heard the only way to get rid of it was to wipe and reinstall vista from scratch. So I used a burnt disc that my friend sent with the computer and did just that. I want to call it restoring or formatting but to be honest I'm sure exactly which it was. I put the disc in and followed the directions, in the end my computer was like completely new. None of my old files or anything.

I went through device manager and only thing that didn't have a driver was the sound card so I installed that with the disc. Then later on I upgraded my video card to the newest driver from Nvidia website.

That's about it really, I didn't touch anything else or change any settings else where. Before I formatted/restored I would easily get 20+ fps on any game and since then I never get higher then 7 fps.

I did try to find a driver for my monitor, though I'm not sure if there is one. Only thing I found that I thought was the driver said it's not for Vista, which is what I have, so I never installed it. Again, if any more information is needed, please ask and tell me where I can find it and I'll be glad to search for it, I CHECK back here regularly.

Thanks again for any help, it's driving me crazy Quote from: nixxo on October 22, 2009, 04:55:13 AM

Perhaps your "friend" knows what kind of disc you have (recovery/restore DVD, Microsoft Retail Install DVD, OEM Install DVD) ? Also what service pack level is the disc at (or your current system) ?

Is this a brand name computer (e.g. Dell, HP, Gateway, ...) or a custom build ? Is there supposed to be a separate motherboard drivers disc ?Unforutnately I can't get a hold of my friend at the moment, she lives acrossed the country and is unreachable. As for the disc I put it in my system and tried to see if it had a name or anything but it doesn't. When I run it the first window asks to install WIndows Vista so I assume installation disc of some sort.
Edit: The burnt disc is actually a DVD +R, so it's a dvd not a cd.

Orginally the system is Service pack 1, as we speak Vista is installing Service pack 2.

As far as I know about the computer, it isn't custom built, just has new Video card and ram installed. The computer is a Sony VAIO and the OS is Windows Vista Ultimate.

Hope that answered everything, it's the best that I know at this point in time. Anything else, please ask and I'll do my best to answer. If it's something I can find on my own, if possible say how to locate it, so I don't either get CONFUSED or give the wrong information.Just wanted to say I found the problem. I feel pretty stupid but it had nothing to do with my computer but some settings I had in a few games >< Thanks for those who tried to help.
