Solve : What Cable do I Need??

Answer»

I have an old computer. I bought a NEW ide cable for hard drive. Although the label says "40 Pin", which is what I need as my mother board actually has 40 pins. The cable actually provides for only 39 pins. What kind of cable do I need? The 39 pin should still work. Have you TRIED it yet?Yeah, it won't fit. There are 40 pins in the mother board and only 39 pin openings in the cable plug. Definitely won't work.it probably won't fit... since pin #20 is plugged. It will only go into a connector that has no Pin 20...
Since Pin 20 is one of the many ground pins you can chop it off to get the plug in.

make bloody sure you cut off the right one though! OTHERWISE you may make the connector unusable!Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 24, 2010, 07:26:11 PM

He could also drill a small hole into the plugged spot on the cable itself. I would think this would be safer than trying to cut the exact pin or PULL it out. Otherwise, I would see if there is a IDE cable with #20 open.Take a look at an 80 conductor cable...Quote from: patio on February 24, 2010, 07:36:51 PM

That should work too. Some people confuse a 80 conductor, thinking it means there are 80 pin holes. There are still 40/39, but there are 80 wires instead of 40.And most i've seen don't have the "dead" spot...just an empty hole...
