Solve : What could be causing this lockup??

Answer»

I have a SY-P4X400 DRAGON Ultra PLATINUM Edition, Pentium 4.

Brand new hd, clean xp pro install, no transferred files.

Also new: two 1 gb sdram modules.

Problem: Computer locks up (no mouse, no keyboard function, have to reboot by shutting off power to it).

First noticed the problem when I thought I'd GOTTEN a virus and tried to run Spybot S&d. It hung. Tried AdAware, it hung. Tried several antivirus, both drive based and online. They all hung.

Someone suggested I check the memory. I ran docmem burn-in but I did not know how long it was supposed to run or if it was ever going to be done. I stopped it after half a day, and 1 loop. No problems.

I can log into XP both safe mode and regular, but can't run any scans, and cannot run disk cleanup utility (from accessories menu). Haven't tried to defrag. I don't think that's the problem, anyway.

I thought maybe the system was corrupt and tried to repair from the install cd. It hung.

I ran the HD manufacturer's (Seagate) diagnostics. The short diagnostic ran fine, showed no problems. The long diagnostic hung at 9%.

What can I do now? What could POSSIBLY be causing this problem?

Thanks.Try running with just one ram stick. If the hangup persists then SWAP the sticks and run with the second. If the hangup occurs again perhaps your ram can be considered error free, but you might just try a different ram stick.
