The US ECONOMY has been on a slow downward slide since the "dot-com" bubble burst back in the early part of the decade. The stock market looked good for a long time because it's been "propped" by a lot of foreign money. Unemployment USUALLY "lags" everything else, so by the time unemployment NUMBERS look bad, you're pretty much "tanked," anyway. Even if it is a matter of personal responsibility, and pulling oneself up by one's proverbial bootstraps, there are far fewer opportunities to do so, whether your collar is blue or white.
