I am using windows 7 ultimate.
Recently when I plugged my external HDD (160GB) to windows 7, a MESSAGE popped up, telling me that I needed to format the external HDD before I could use the HDD.
That's RIDICULOUS. The external HDD got more than 100GB data.
I have TRIED all the USB ports but every time when I plugged the external HDD to the computer, windows 7 just kept telling me to format the external HDD.
I have no idea why windows 7 got this problem,
but windows XP works well with my external HDD.
Please help me if you could.

Are you saying the XP reads the external HDD and Win 7 does not?
You have a dual boot? Both OS on the same desktop?
Yes, that relay does sound strange. Do you have any other external HDD that show the same problem? Is the external a specific brand?
Just on a dumb hunch,
-- have you DONE a virus scan on your Windows 7 OS?
How is it reported in Disk MANAGEMENT ? ?
