Solve : Windows Crashed Need To Backup/Transfer/Move files to my External Hard Drive?

Answer»

Thank you for your help.

I have a dell 1710 Windows Vista. My Windows shut down and I never backed up any of my files. Dos is working great but takes a long TIME. I was wondering if there is a command that will transfer everything from my C: drive an either move/transfer/or copy all the files at once to my External E: drive.

Right now I'm having to me each directory at a time within each directory and that is just TAKING forever.

Thanks again for your help

JoeSmoeBy DOS, what exactly do you mean?

Also, can you give us some more insight to the problem? What exactly happens? Any error messages? What did you do before the problem?Thank you for your help.

I'm using Dos to backup my files to my external hardrive. After all my files are moved I'm going to recover my whole computer and set it back to factory settings. Like when I first bought it.

I'm trying to save/move/copy or transfer the files to my external hardrive before I do this.
I know the command to move 1 directory at a time. This is taking a very long time. What I'm wanting to know is can I transfer my whole c: drive to me external hard drive using a dos command.

I was listening to an audio file before my windows just shut down. I have not been able to repair windows or even go back to a previous date that windows was working properly. It seems the whole file is corrupt or just shutdown and will not work at all.

I hope I answered your questions correctly.

Thanks

JoeSmoeI ASSUME you've tried Safe Mode?

Have you tried a Repair Install with the Vista DVD?

As for your initial question, I'm actually not very familiar with Vista. How did you get into DOS? Is it Command Prompt by any chance?Safe actually does not come up. It offers to options when I turn on my computer. 1st one is to do a repair. the 2nd one is to skip it and just go directly opening up windows. The second one does not work. The screen stays black. I assume this is because windows is not COMING up.

Under the 1 section after it tries to repair there are other options. One of the options is to operate in Dos.

I just need to understand the command for transferring all the files from one drive to the next drive. So from C: to E:(Which is my external Hardrive)

Dos Windows XP is very similar to Vista.

You have a guess to what the dos command might be?

Thanks,

JoeSmoeHave a look at the Copy command.

Code: [Select]Copy /?
For example:

Code: [Select]copy "C:\path\to\file.txt" "E:\directory\file.txt"
You can do it with folders too:

Code: [Select]copy "C:\folder" "E:\folder"
I would avoid copying the entire drive. Look for specific files/folders, especially important data that you absolutely need.

Note: you may WANT to look at the xcopy command as well.I will give it a try

Thank you again

JSGood luck.
