Solve : Windows XP will not see my new HDD?

Answer»

I have Win Xp sp2. I have a 60gb C: drive that I just re-formatted and it's working fine. I have a Maxtor 120gb hard drive that was in a modded xbox console. I don't know what exactly was done to the hard drive but I have installed it as a slave on my PC. When I BOOTED up xp, it recognized the new hard ware. The drivers are installed. When I go to disk drives in computer management, I can see the maxtor drive installed.

My problem is I can't see the new drive in disk manager or explorer to reformat it. The drive works fine when installed in the xbox but not in the pc.

Any ideas?Whats the harddrive type? Maxtor,Western Digtal.... Just shearch for the drive on google with format which ever drive and it should workIt's a maxtor DiamondMax 120GB HDD.

My problem isn't really formatting it, it's being able to see it in disk management. The only place it shows up is in Device Manager but I can't format it from there.DLoad and run the MaxBlast software from Here

Use it to create a bootable CD and prepare the drive for use as if it were new...I can't run the software. It gives me a message that I need to have at least one maxtor drive installed on my computer.Quote from: jango on December 28, 2007, 04:53:51 PM

the harddrive is most likely locked, as most xbox HD's are. did you place the HD in your xbox or did someone else?I was there when it was done but I really have no idea what he did to it. I do seem to remember something about locking it though....

How would I go about unlocking it?how did you format your HD? was is a soft-modded xbox or a hard-modded xbox?

P.S.

soft-mod = software mod
hard-mod = hardware mod. (modchip)It was a hard mod. I don't really remember/know what was done to it. I know we put it in the pc, formatted it and created 2 partitions. We also installed a few bits of software. The we put it in the xbox, I remember having to change the eeprom so when I put the xbox online microsoft wouldn't pickup that it had a new hard drive. Like I SAID I don't really know what was done to the drive, my buddy was doing all the software stuff while I was soildering the mod chip in, so I wasn't really paying attention. After it was all put together, we had to flash the bios and install the home brew OS to be able to read games from the hard drive.

I'm going to dig around on xbox-scene and see if I can find out how to unlock the drive.you will most likely need the boot disk you used to format the harddrive. the option to lock/unlock the harddrive should be on that.Try formatting the drive in dos mode, and set a partion for it..Quote from: barryd on December 29, 2007, 09:20:45 PM

He can't. The drive is locked.

jango from what i've read you will need to re-install it into the xbox since it was a hard lock...
Then it is a 2 STEP process to unlock it with NO guarantees...

Your Mileage MAY Vary...Thanks for the help guys. I've found something on the xbox-scene website. I think if I install the drive back in the xbox, I can use the hacked bios to unlock the drive. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to get in touch with the guy that did all this and see if he can fix it.

I'll post back with the outcome.hey, there should be a tutorial on xbox-scene in the the origional xbox section about how to use your xbox hard drive in your pc. but if that doesnt work you could try using slayers-auto-evox-installer which will probably be able to unlock it if you have an evox dashboard/OS installed(IM not sure about other dashboards). You can get slayers from xbins but i think that version is corrupted. Your best bet is to get instructions how how to get it from the slayer origional website which can be located at: slayer.xbox-scene.com . I hope this has been some help to you, merry christmas and a happy new year
