Solve : Wireless Acces Point Vs. Wireless router?

Answer»

Just wondering how does a wireless access point differ from a wireless router. I am new to alot of this computer stuff so if you have to break it down in to looney tunes ( Wyle E. Coyote VS road runner) terms anc pictures, i wonr be offended.

thanks

Coyote has lots of resources, he is the wireless router.
Road- runner has no baggage, he is wireless access point.
perfect...i love it.....HA HA.

Next question why would someone use one vs the other ??They would use an AP when thy have no need for a router.
Router are more often used when you have other things to do.

Example;
You have three PCs. Two Desktops, one laptop. They can all connect wireless. But wireless can only go 54mbps under good conditions. So you get a router that can do both 100mps Ethernet as well as wireless. Faster file transfer between the desktops. The laptop goes wireless so you can mover around in your living space. When friends VISIT, they use the wireless for their own laptops.

Not much use anymore for a simple AP. But there are special needs where the AP does a better JOB. But that can be debated.
Some routers don't like it if you use them as an AP. (Maybe it hurts their feelings? ). Anyway, APs are so seldom used by home users & now no longer cost-effective.
I have three routers in my home system. Had one AP, but it could not take the heat. So it is in retirement. Only one router does DHCP. The other two ACCEPT that and just do the job.Sounds like a router has more BELLS and whisltes. I just found out that the router has the software for a firewall and other security features, and the WAP dosent ? I really appriciate all your help. thanks
