Solve : Wireless mouse problem?

Answer»

Can anyone offer a wireless novice some advice?

Having recently bought an Acer Aspire 5612WLMi laptop, I have got my hands on a Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse 4000 v1.0 but am having problems with it.

I've tried the receiver in every available usb port and the mouse appears in 'mouse properties' in the control PANEL, but it doesn't want to work!

According to the device properties "the device is working properly", but the location is shown as "Location 0". Is this supposed to say that? No matter what I try I can't get it to work. Am I supposed to disable the touchpad or something first?

I've plugged in another wired usb mouse and that worked fine straight away. Is my wireless mouse faulty?

Thanks in advance for any help. I thought you were just supposed to plug it in and it would work!

Cheers,
The FoxAssuming your new wireless mouse is compatible with your operating system and you have followed the manufacturer's instructions for installing your device, correctly, you may need to look on the mouse, itself, for a "Connect" or "Reset" button.

If your mouse requires batteries...which is usually a gimme...make sure these are installed properly.

Try pressing the "Connect" or "Reset" button on the mouse and see if your mouse is now working.

Please let me know if this fixed your problem. Thanks for the tip but I've already tried this and still no joy. It's running on Windows XP Home, but I have ALSO just tried it on my old desktop (runnning windows 98se - hence the new laptop!) and the same thing happens there.

The batteries have been replaced (and the red LIGHT is fully on underneath the mouse).

I've also tried the connect buttons on both the receiver and the mouse but this hasn't changed anything either.

Before I plugged the mouse in I loaded up the software off the disk that came with it - could this have caused a problem?

I didn't put in my original post that under the mouse settings in control panel the touchpad is shown as "plugged into PS/2 port" under device properties, whereas the wireless mouse is still showing "location 0".

Any ideas?

The FoxThere are two things you may want to try...

1) Visit Windows Update for an updated driver for your device, or
2) Visit the following URL to download and install the LATEST software for your device: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/DownloadResult.aspx?prod=m_wnom4000&os=xp⟨=en&driverVersion=IntelliPoint%205.5

Please let me know if any of the above have helped.wireless mice and KEYBOARDS are a bad idea, i just feel sorry for any idiot that tries to invent wireless electricity... can you say "crispy fried idiot"? Quote
