Solve : won't boot from CD? |
|
Answer» I am trying to re-install Windows 2000 from a CD. I have changed the BIOS to boot from the CD first, but it STILL goes straight to the hard drive. The BIOS probably needs to be updated but that will be impossible with this problem. Any ideas? Would changing the IDE configuration help? There is nothing on the computer that I need; I clean reinstall will be fine. Thanks. At some POINT of booting from CD, there is a message: Good questions. The computer had Windows 98, so I installed Windows 2000 with a CD. I did the automatic route and let the CD do it all. Bad choice. Windows 2000 installed but kept a password from Windows 98 that I don't know, and so I can't log onto Windows 2000. This actually should not be possible... Use FDisk from a boot floppy and remove and re-create the partitions as you want them. Set the first partition as active...format it and re-install. Win2k on a clean install will not retain anything from a previous installation...The computer will only boot from the hard drive. It won't boot from a floppy or a CD. I've tried every combination of having the floppy and/or CD in/out of the machine when it boots, etc. In the BIOS, would changeing the IDE configuration help? Or setting the jumpers to a different position? Is this a MS Win2K CD that says Microsoft all over it ? ? If so it should be bootable. In the BIOS under Advanced settings you want to use the arrow keys to highlight the CDRom as first boot device...then press F10 to save changes and exit. If this is a real Win2K CD it should re-boot and start the Setup process... |
