The electrostatic potential is given as a function of x in figure ( a) and (b) . Calculate the corresponding electric fields in regions A, B, C and D . Plot the electric field as a function of x for the figure (b).

Answer»

Solution :The relation between electric field and potential
`E= -(dv)/(DX)`
(a) REGION A: dv = - 3V , dx = 0.2 m
Electric field `E_(A)= -((-3))/(0.2) = 15 Vm^(-1)`
Region B: dv= 0V , dx = 0.2 m
Electric field `E_(B) = -(0)/(0.2) =0`
Region C: dv = 2V, dx =0.2 m
Electric field `E_(C)= (-2)/(0.2) = 10 Vm^(-1)`
Region D: dv= -6 V, dx =0.2 m
Electric field `E_(D)= -((-6)/(0.2))= 30 Vm^(-1)`
`E_(A)= 15 Vm^(-1)"" E_(B)=0 "" E_(c)=10Vm^(-1) "" E_(D)= 30 Vm^(-1)`
(b)
