The vapour pressure in mmHg of a CH_(3)OH-C_(2)H_(5)OH binary solution , p, at a certain temperature is represented by the equation p=254-119x, where x is the mole fraction of C_(2)H_(5)OH . Find the vapour pressure of the pure components. |

Answer» Solution :We have, `p=x_(A).p_(A)^(0)+x_(B)p_(B)^(0)`………..(EQN. 3) or `p=x_(CH_(3)OH).p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0)+x_(C_(2)H_(5)OH).p_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)^(0)` or `p=(1-x_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0))+x_(C_(2)H_(5)OH).p_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)^(0)` or `p=p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0)-(p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0)-p_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)^(0))x_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)`. Comparing this EQUATION with the GIVEN equation, we get `p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0)=254mm` and `p_(CH_(3)OH)^(0)-p_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)^(0)=119mm` `:.p_(C_(2)H_(5)OH)^(0)=254-119=135mm` |
