What are point defects and stoichiometric defects? |
|
Answer» Solution : Point DEFECTS are the irregularities or deviations from ideal arrangement around a point or an atom in a crystalline substance, whereas stoichiometric defects are type of point defects that donot disturb the stoichiometry of the crystal STRUCTURE. Stoichiometric defects are of two types : (i) Vacancy defect and (ii) INTERSTITIAL defects These two defects are shown by non-ionic solids. Ionic solids however, shows Schottky and Frenkel defects and they maintain electrical NEUTRALITY. The stoichiometric defects are also called INTRINSIC or thermodynamic defects. |
