What happens when (i) a pressure greater than the osmotic pressure is applied on the solution side separated from solvent by a semipermeable membrane ? (ii) acetone is added to pure ethanol ?

Answer»

Solution :(i) Solvent from the solution will move towards the solvent compartment. This is called reverse osmosis.
(II) In PURE ethanol, molecules are hydrogen bonded. On ADDING acetone, its molecules get in between the host molecules and BREAK some of the hydrogen bonds between them. Due to WEAKENING of interactions, the solution shows positive deviation from Raoult.s law.
