What is a Burndown chart?

Answer»

A burndown chart represents how quickly the team is working on the customer user stories. The burndown chart depicts total effort against the amount of the work for each iteration

The burndown is a chart that explains how the team is burning CUSTOMERS’ user stories. It SHOWS the total effort versus the amount of work we deliver for each iteration.

The above GRAPH gives us:

  1. Work COMPLETED against each iteration
  2. Work remaining for each iteration
  3. Work done so far for each iteration
  4. When can we expect the work to be completed

Burndowns provide information as below:

  1. Provides clarity on the project
  2. Provides information on the impact of decisions TAKEN
  3. If the project is delayed then the chart warns us, so that the team can implement workarounds for impediments
  4. Warns you early if things aren't going according to plan.
