Answer» Bleaching powder is calcium oxychloride. The chemical formula of Bleaching Powder is CaOCl₂ and its Chemical name is Calcium Oxychloride. It is Prepared by Chlorine gas over dry slaked lime. Generally, this method is used in large-scale preparation of bleaching powder. Ca(OH)₂ + Cl₂ → CaOCl₂ + H₂O Uses : (i) Used for bleaching cotton and linen in the textile industry and wood pulp in the paper industry etc. (ii) It is used for disinfecting the drinking water. Bleaching powder or Calcium hypochlorite (CaOCl2) is mixed salt have two type of anion Cl-(chloride ion ) and OCl-(hypochlorite ion) .it act as oxidizing agent and bleaching agent Bleaching powder has a lot of uses. ■ It is used for bleaching silk and wool. It is mainly used as bleaching agent for cotton, linen and wood pulp. Bleaching action of bleaching powder is due to oxidation and it is permanent CaOCl2 + H2O——-Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 Cl2 + H2O——- O +2HCl COLOR+O—-> COLORLESS ■ Bleaching powder is used as disinfectant and germicide especially in the sterilization of drinking water. ■ It is used for manufacturing of chloroform. ■ It is used as an oxidising agent in many chemical industries to obtain various chemical products.
