What is Product Backlog Refinement?

Answer»

Backlog refinement (EARLIER KNOWN as backlog grooming) is an event during which the product OWNER and the team review ITEMS on the backlog to ensure that they are appropriate for the tasks at hand. They are prioritized, and the items are ready for delivery. This activity happens frequently or is an ongoing activity.

Activities that occur during the refinement are as below:

  1. User stories that are no longer relevant are removed
  2. New user stories are created, as and when new changes or new needs are discovered
  3. The priority of the created user stories is re-assessed
  4. Estimates are assigned to user stories
  5. Estimates that are discovered during the iterative process are changed or corrected
  6. User stories that are on high priority are split into smaller chunks
  7. User stories which have higher estimates are broken into smaller manageable stories
