What is the action of benzene diazonium chloride on: (a) Phenol in alkaline medium (b) Aniline |
Answer» Solution :(a) Phenol in alkaline medium : Phenol is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution to give a solution of sodium phenoxide. The solution is cooled in ice and cold benzene diazonium chloride solution is added. There is a reaction between the dizaonium ion and the phenoxide ion and yellow-orange solution or precipitate is formed. The product formed is known as azo COMPOUND in which two benzene RINGS are linked by a nitrogen bridge. (b) ANILINE : sone coloured azo compounds are frequently used as dyes known as azo dyes. The one MADE from PHENYLAMINE (aniline) is known as "aniline" yellow
