Answer» Answer: Class – 8 English Literature The Narayanpur Incident A. The order in which the events happened. 1. Manju and Babu had gone to watch the procession. 2. The college students were taking out a procession. 3. They served a notice to the collector when they reached the gates. 4. After dinner, Suman came in with a boy who was carrying a cyclostyling machine. 5. Patil, the Sub-Inspector, came in to warn the family. 6. Patil took away the machine. 7. The POLICE had come to search the house. B. Explain these sentences. 1. “It’s like a declaration of war.” Mahatma Gandhi had called for the British to LEAVE India. On the 8th of August 1942 – the Quit India Movement began. This statement tells us that the people of India told the Britishers, that there would be a war soon and that the Britishers would be dealt with as enemies of the Indians. 2. “And this is my country as much as it is yours.” This is spoken by Patil, the Sub-Inspector, when he came to warn the family, of the search to be conducted by the police. He says that even though he works for the British, he was an Indian and ALSO loved his country as much as Mohan’s family did, and had come to help them. 3. No need for Mohan to announce, “Amma, it’s the police.” This happens after Patil a family friend had come and warned Mohan’s family about the search to be conducted by the police. Now when the police actually came, the family was mentally prepared for what was going to happen next. Appreciating the Text :- Mohan : He is a young freedom fighter, who joined the struggle against the Britishers, after his father got arrested by the British. We see him leading the silent march to hand over a letter to the British declaring war against them. Mother : Amma knows that she is risking the lives of all her family members. Yet, she contributes to the freedom struggle in whatever way she can. Her actions show her love and support for the nation. Manju : A young little girl, who is willing to do whatever her mother and brothers tell her to do. She is willing to help her family in whatever way she can. Babu : A young boy who is very excited to see his ELDER brother take an active role in the freedom struggle. He also wants to help his family in any way he can. Suman : A young girl, who is active in the freedom struggle, along with Mohan. Taking a risk against the Britishers, helping Mohan to cyclostyle Mahatma Gandhi’s speech to REACH it to the public. Patil : A Sub-Inspector in the British police, but a good friend of Mohan’s father. Helps the family by warning them about the search that is going to take place. He also helps them to hide the cyclostyling machine and saves the entire family from the British police. 2. Amma, Mohan, Babu and Manju were taking a huge risk in taking part in the freedom movement. The very first time when Mohan takes part in the procession, when the quit India movement began and Babu took Manju to see procession, it was risky as anything could have happened. The second time when Suman brings the cyclostyling machine to Mohan’s house and Amma allows them to cyclostyle Gandhiji’s speech. It is a tense moment, they got lucky as Patil came on time and hid the cyclostyle machine, or else the entire family could have been arrested. 3. Family, friendship and trust play a very important role in a fight for one’s country. We see Mohan as a young freedom fighter taking his father’s fight forward. Amma, Babu and Manju standing by Mohan, fighting against the British. Patil’s friendship with Mohan’s father makes him come forward and help Amma and the entire family and save them from the British police. Explanation: |
