The theme for this year is 'A Connected Commonwealth'.Commonwealth Day was earlier known as the Empire Day. In 1958, Harold Macmillan, the then Prime Minister of United Kingdom, announced in Parliament the renaming of Empire Day as Commonwealth Day and since then it is celebrated.It is celebrated on the second Monday in March in many countries whereas in India it is celebrated on May 24.This year marks the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Commonwealth.
