Using data from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Airborne Telescope, researchers scanned the lunar surface at a more precise wavelength than had been used before - six microns instead of three. This allowed them to distinguish the spectral fingerprint of molecular water.
