Why is it easier to walk on soft sand with a flat shoe than with a pencil-heeled shoe?

Answer» A flat shoe has a larger area in contact with the sand and as such exerts less pressure on it. On the other hand, A pencil-heeled shoe exerts more pressure on the ground as it has smaller area in contact with sand. Thus, a flat shoe does not sink into sand whereas a pencil heeled shoe does. It is due to the similar reason that a camel can run easily in a desert.
