Answer» Solution :MECHANISM of Aldol addition reaction : step I : Base `(-OH^(-))` abstracts a hydrogen atom from `alpha`-carbon of aldehyde to from carbanion. In this step hydrogen GIVING the reactive enolate.  Step II : The nucleophilic enolate attacks the aldehyde at the electrophilic CARBONYL C in a nucleophilic addition type process giving an intermediate alkoxide  Step III : Alkoxide ion abstracts a hydrogen ion from WATER to from `beta`- hydroxy aldehyde. Base `OH^(-)` ion is regenerated
