Write short notes on,Principal quantum numberii) Azimuthal quantum numberagnetic quantum number

Answer»

Theprincipal quantum number is the quantum numberdenoted by n and which indirectly describes the size of the electron orbital. It is always assigned an integer value (i.e., n = 1,2,3,...), but its value may never be 0. An orbital for which n = 2 is larger, for example, than an orbital for which n = 1.

Themagnetic quantum numberdistinguishes the orbitals available within a subshell, and is used to calculate the azimuthal component of the orientation of orbital in space. Electrons in a particular subshell (such as s, p, d, or f) are defined by values of ℓ (0, 1, 2, or 3).
