The actual intensity of the flame has to do with the heat produced and the resulting blackbody radiation. simply put, things glow when they are hot. Microscopically, there has to be a production of photons so I think what’s going on is that when there is enough thermal energy in the surroundings, electrons in the molecules are excited to higher energy levels and return to their initial state so emitting photons. |
