1.

Write the products obtained when benzyl phenol ether is heated with HI.

Answer»

Solution :Protonation of benzyl phenol ether gives oxononium ion in which `O-C_(6)H_(5)` has some DOUBLE bond character due to resonance between the lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen ATOM and the `sp^(2)`-hydridized carbon of the PHENYL ring. Therefore, attack by `I^(-)` ion EXCLUSIVELY breaks the weaker `O-CH_(2)C_(6)H_(5)` bond FORMING phenol and benzyl iodide.
