Question : What are 3R approach in the effective waste management? |
Answer» Solution :Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are the 3R approach for the effective waste management. Reducing the amount of waste, we produce is the BEST WAY to help the environment. Buying products with MINIMUM packaging, not borrowing things which we do not use often, starting a compost bin, saving energy and WATER by turning are ways to reduce. Reuse materials in their original form or pass those materials on to others, who could use them. Paper cardboard, metals, plastics and textiles, etc can be RECYCLED. The compost or reuse of bio-degradable wastes is also a kind of recycling.

Question : What advantage over an aquatic organism does a terrestrial organism have withregard to obtaning oxygen for respiration ? |
Answer» SOLUTION :The amount of `O_(2)`dissolved in water is less as COMPARED to `O_(2)`in air. Hence, aquatic organismsneed to breathe faster. THUS, TERRESTRIAL organismsspend less ENERGY in obtaining `O_(2)`
907. |
Question :What advantage over an aquatic organism does a terrestrial organism have with regard to obtaining oxygen for respiration ? |
Answer» Solution : The AQUATIC organisms USE OXYGEN dissolved in water while TERRESTRIAL organisms obtain it from the ATMOSPHERE, where the amount of oxygen is much higher.
908. |
Question : What advantage over an aquatic organism does a terrestrial organism have with regard to obtaining oxygen for respiration? |
Answer» Solution :The organism that LIVES in water such as a fish obtains oxygen for respiration which is dissolved in water. Whereas the terrestrial organisms take in oxygen directly from the air. Since, the amount of oxygen dissolved in water is fairly low as compared to the amount of oxygen in the air, BREATHING RATE in aquatic organisms is MUCH faster than terrestrial organisms.

Question : In what way is the anomalous behaviour of water advantageous to aquatic animals ? |
Answer» Solution :(1) Normally the FERTILIZED ovum (zygote) develops into a young one . But the unfertilized ovum also develops into a young one GENERALLY the MALE. (2) The process of development of young ones from unfertilized ovum is called parthenogenesis. (3) In this process sperms develop by mitotic DIVISION whereas ova develop by meiotic division. (4) This strange kind of reproduction occurs in ANIMALS like bees and wasps. |

Question :"We cannot pass on to our progeny the experiences and qualifications earned during our life time". Justify the statement giving reason and examples. |
Answer» Solution :We acquire knowledge and skills in our LIFETIME such as learning DANCE, music, PHYSICAL fitness, ETC. But these skills cannot be PASSED to our progenies because: (i) Such characters or experiences acquired during one.s lifetime do not bring any change in the DNA of the germ cell. (ii) Only germ cells are responsible for passing on the characters from the parents to the progeny. |
|
916. |
Question : Why cannot the experiences of an individual during its lifetime be passed on to its progeny? |
Answer» SOLUTION :Experiences achieved during the lifetime of an individual does not make any change in the gene of the individual. For example, if a person READ a book on birds, the knowledge he earns by reading the book does not make any change in the gene. Hence, this knowledge will not GET automatically TRANSMITTED to his next generation. Such trait is called acquired trait.

Question : We can built up the evolutionary relationships of species by identifying hierarchies of characteristics between them. Explain. |
Answer» Solution :Classification refers to the arrangement of organisms into different groups on the basis of similarities-dissimilarities and placing them in a hierarchy that reveals their relationship. `rarr` The groups of organisms are classified on the basis of definite characteristics. They provide the information and explanation about their EVOLUTIONARY aspects. `rarr` They classified according their are characteristics. Classification of organisms based on evolution: `rarr` Some basic characteristics are common in most organisms. Cell is a structural and functional unit of LIFE for all. The characteristics in the next level of classification would be common for most, but not all organisms. `rarr` Organisms can be classified into two different groups, i.e., EUKARYOTES and prokaryotes on the basis of whether their CELLS possess well defined nucleus and membranous organelles or not. `rarr` Organisms having well defined nucleus are of two types depending on number of cells : Unicellular and multicellular. `rarr` Organisms can even be classified into plants and animals on the basis of photosynthetic property. `rarr` In the multicellular organisms, the tissues, organs, organ systems, etc., are distinctly developed in plants and animals. In animal bodies the exoskeleton around the body and the endoskeleton inside the body have different basic form and are therefore different from each other. Thus, a hierarchy DEVELOPS evolutionary relationships among organisms which allow us to make classification groups. The more characteristics have common in two species, the more closely they are related. And the more closely they are related, the more recent common ancestor they will have. Thus, classification of species is infact a reflection of their evolutionary relationship. |

Answer» Solution :I VISITED to a nearby village and collected the following information about growing of different plants from farmers. (1) sugarcane : (a) Farmers use stem cuttings for growing sugarcane crop. (b) They place the stem cutting horizontally in the furrow but not upright. (c) Shorts will START to grow from the nodes of the stem breaking through the soil to form individual sugarcane stalks. (2) Chrysanthemum: (a) It is grown from its seeds and also by means of cuttings. (b) Farmes place seeds and cuttings of chrysanthemum where amount of sun. (c) The well -draining soil is required when planting. (d) Enough water should be given at intervals. (3) Prime-rose : (a) Primeroses that are healthy in appearence preferbly with unopened buds are utilised for growing. (b) Primeroses can also be grown from seeds with an equal mixture of soil, sand peatmoss. (c) Generally seeds are sown indoors during winter. (d) Once seendings have obtained their second or third leaves they can be transplanted in the garden. (e) Cuttings can also be taken from some varieties during summer to grow prime-roses. (4) Stem TUBERS (Potato): (a) They are mainly propagated by vegetative methods (cloning). (b) Potato tubers have nodes or eyes from which new growth begins. (c) Cegetative seed can be either a WHOLE tuber or cut tuber. (d) Most potato cultivating farers produce tubers. Each tuber contain several eyes, tuber with eye cut and sow in soil. (5) Plumpgourd ( Dondakaya): (a) Farmers usually sow seeds of plump gourd to grow a new crop. (b) Stem cuttings are also being used by farmers to grow plumpgourd crop. (c) First they dig the soil to make burrows. Moist the furrow before planting the stem cutting upright. (d) A FTER 35 to 45 days lateral buds begin to grow from the nodes of stem cuttings . |

Question : Vidya is a married woman who has a cleft chin (a deep hollow in her chin). Vidya has recently been blessed with a baby girl who has also a cleft chin. Anita is a close friend of Vidya. When she learnt that Vidya's baby girl also has a cleft chin like Vidya, she got worried. The is because Anita has a huge scar on her left cheek which remained permanently after she got a cut on the cheek during an accident which took placein her school days. Anita is worried that her baby (which is due shortly), may also have a scar on her left cheek just like her. One day, Anita's niece Radha, who is a science student of class X, came to see her. Anita shared her apprehension with Radha. Radha could understand her problem. She told Anita that her case is entirely different from that of Vidya. Radha explained everything to Anita clearly. Anita was now very much relaxed. (a) What is an acquired trait ? (b) What is an inherited trait ? (c ) What type of trait is (i) cleft chin, and (ii) cheek scar ? (d) Explain why, Vidya's cleft chin has been passed on to her baby but Anita's cheek scar cannot be passed on to her baby. (e) What values are displayed by Radha in this episode ? |
Answer» Solution :(a) A TRAIT (or CHARACTERISTIC) of an organism which is 'not inherited' but develops in response to the environment, is called an acquired trait. Acquired trait involves changes only in the non-reproductive cells of an organism and hence cannot be passed on to the next generation. (b) A trait (or characteristic) of an organism which is caused by a change in the genes (or DNA) present in the reproductive cells (or gametes) of parent organism is called inherited trait. Inherited trait can be passed on the next generation. (c ) (i) Cleft chin is an inherited trait. (ii) Cheek scar is an acquired trait. (d) Vidya's cleft chin trait has been passed on to her baby because it is an inherited trait INVOLVING reproductive cells (or gametes). ANITA's cheek scar cannot be passed on to her baby because it is an acquired trait involving only non-reproductive body cells. (e) The values displayed by Radha in this episode are (i) Awareness (or knowledge) of acquired traits and inherited traits (ii) Application of knowledge in real-life situations, and (III) concern for the health of Anita during pregnancy (by reducing her tension). |
