Question : On the basis of organelles which types of cell are found ?

Answer»

Solution :Cell is the smallest unit of living organism like plants, animals and other micro ORGANISMS also possess cellular structure.
On the basis of organelles found in a cell, cells are of two types : (a) prokaryotic (b) eukaryotic.
Eukaryotic cells on the basis of presence of cell wall / absence of cell wall possess two clear structures, plant cell and animal cell.
Typical plant cell is studied by onion cell and animal cell can be studied by human chick cells.
In a plant cell, a distinct cell wall and below it there is a cell membrane.
In an animal cell, there is an outer membrane only.
Inside each cell is a dense membrane bound structure called nucleus.
This nucleus contains the chromosomes which in turn contains the genetic material, DNA.
Cells that have membrane bound nuclei are called eukaryotic WHEREAS cells that lack a membrane bound nucleus are called prokaryotic cell.
Cytoplasm : In both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, a semi-fluid matrix called cytoplasm occupies the volume of the cell. The cytoplasm is the main arena of cellular activities in both the plant and animal cells. Various chemical reactions occur in it to keep the cell in the .living state.
Parkinje proposed the word .protoplasm. for this matrix. Its matrix contains 65 - 80% water. Its 95% part is formed of combination of main four elements. C, H, O, N, in remaining 5% thirty elements like Cat, K+, S are in the form of compound
Eukaryotic cells have other membrane bound distinct structures called organelles like the endoplasmic reticulum, the golgi COMPLEX, lysosomes, mitochondria and VACUOLES.
The prokaryotic cells lack such membrane bound organelles.
Ribosomes are non-membrane bound organelles found in all cells both eukaryotic as well as prokaryotic. Within the cell, ribosomes are found not only in the cytoplasm but also within the two organelles, chloroplasts and mitochondria and on rough ER.
Animal cells contain another non-membrane bound organelle called centriole which helps in cell division.

Question : On the basis of numbers, give types of stament and give examples.

Answer»

Solution :Androecium is composed of stamens. Each stamen represents male reproductive organ.
Each stamen consists of a FILAMENT and anther.
Pollen grains are produced in pollen-sacs.
Each anther is usually bilobed and each lobe has two chambers, the pollen-sacs. Pollen grains are produced in pollen-sacs.
A sterile stamen is CALLED staminode.
Filament and anther are CONNECTED by connective.
Stamens of flower may be united with other members such as petals or among themselves.
Epipetalous : When stamens are attached to the petals, they are epipetalous e.g. brinjal.
Epiphyllous : When stamens are attached to the PERIANTH they are epiphyllous as in the flower lily
Polyandrous : The stamens in a flower may either remain free is called Polyandrous.
Monoadelphous : The stamens may be united into one bunch or one BUNDLE is called monoa delphaes c.g. china rose.
Diadelphous and Polydelphous : Stamens may be united in two bundles is called Diadelphous. Stamens may be united into more than two bundles is called Polydelphous stamen.
There may be a variation in the length of filaments within a flower, e.g. Salvia and mustard.

Question : On germination a seed first produces shoots with leaves, flowers appear later, (A) Why do you think this happens ? (B) How is this advantageous to the plant ?

Answer»

Solution :(A) As soon as seed germinates, the plant enters into vegetative growth period. This period takes LIGHT stimulus (a critical length of light exposed to different PLACE, i.e., photoperiod) and synthesise the florigen (a flowering HORMONE) which induce flowering.
(B) The vegetative growth period prepares the plant to bear reproductive structures like FLOWER, fruits and seeds and allows it to grow mature and reproduce.
