Question : (a) Write about the various structures of female’s external genitalia. (b) Explain any two methods of natural contraception. |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) Mons pubis is a cushion of fatty tissue covered by skin and pubic hair. The labia majora are FLESHY folds of tissue, which extend down from the mons pubis and surround the vaginal opening. The labia minora are paired folds of tissue under the labia majora. The opening of the vagina is often covered partially by a membrane called hymen. The clitoris is a tiny finger-like structure which lies at the upper junction of the two labia minora above the urethral opening. (b) (i) Periodic abstinence is a method in which the COUPLES avoid or abstain from coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle when ovulation could be expected. As chances of fertilisation are very high during this period, it is called the fertile period. Therefore, by abstaining from coitus during this period, conception could be prevented. (ii) Withdrawal or coitus interruptus is a method in which the MALE partner withdraws his PENIS from the vagina just before ejaculation so as to avoid insemination. (iii) Lactational amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) method is based on the fact that ovulation and therefore the cycle do not occur during the period of intense lactation following parturition. Therefore, as long as the mother breast-feeds the child fully, chances of conception are ALMOST nil. However, this method has been reported to be effective only upto a maximum period of six months following parturition. |

Question : (a) Taking one example each of habitat loss and fragmentation, explain how are the two responsible for biodiversity loss. (b) Explain two different ways of biodiversity conservation. |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) (i) When large-sized HABITATS are broken or fragmented due to human settlements, building of mads, digging of canals, etc. animals requiring large territories and some animals with MIGRATORY habitats are badly affected. (ii) The Amazon rain forest (called the “lungs of the planet”) is being cut and cleared for cultivation of soya beans or for conversion intq grasslands for raising beef cattle. (b) There are two basic approaches for conservation of biodiversity. (i) ‘In-situ’ Conservation (on SITE conservation) (ii) ‘Ex-situ’ conservation (off site conservation) In-Situ Conservation : It is conservation and protection of biodiversity in its natural habitat. (ii) It helps in recovering population in the surroundings where' they have developed their distinctive features. Example : national parks, biosphere reserves, WILDLIFE sanctuaries. Ex-Situ Conservation : It is conservation of selected rare plants and animals in places outside their natural habitat. (ii) It helps in recovering population or preventing their extinction under conditions that closely resemble their natural habitats. Examples :botanical gardens, ZOOLOGICAL parks, Wildlife safari, gene banks, etc. |

Question : A sugarcane has been affected by virus. How can a virus free cane be developed from it ? Explain the procedure. |
| Answer» Solution :The virus free sugarcane can be developed by the PROCESS of tissue culture where in the whole plant is REGENERATED from explants. i.e., any part of a plant grown in a test tube under sterile conditions in special nutrient media. The technique makes USE of the property of TOTIPOTENCY and the fact that the MERISTEM (apical and axillary) of the sugarcane plant is free of virus. Hence, the meristem can be removed and grown In-Vitro to get disease free plant. | |

Question : (a) State the central dogma in molecular biology. Who proposed it? Is it universally applicable? Explain. (b) List any four properties of a molecule to be able to act as a genetic material |
Answer» Solution :(a) Francis Crick proposed the 'central DOGMA' in molecular biology which states that the genetic information FLOWS from In some viruses, the flow of information is in reverse direction, that is from RNA to DNA (b) PROPERTIES in a molecule to act as a genetic material: It should be able to generate its replica. It should chemically and structurally be stable It should provide scope for slow changes (mutation) that are required for evolution It should be able to express itself in the FORM of Mendelian characters. |
|
| 22939. |
Question : (a) state the central dogma as proposed by francis crick are thereany exceptions to it ? Suppport your answer with a reason and an example (b) Explain how the biochemical chraterisation (nature) of Transforming pronciple was determined which was not defined from Griffith 's experiments |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) Francis crick proposed the central dogma in molecular biology , which states that the genetic information flows from DNA`rarr`RNBA`rarr`Protein `DNAoverset(transcription)rarrmRNA(overset(translation)rarrProtein` In some viruses central dogma is seen in reverse direction that is from RNA to DNA as RNA is the main genetic material for example : Retro virus (HIV) and the process is reverse tarnscription (b) Tansforming principle : in 1928 fredericlk GRIFFITH INA series of experiments with straptococcus penumonie (bacteriumerepsonsiable for pneumoia) withessed a miraculous transformation in the bacteria during the course of his experiment a living organism (bacteria ) had changed in phyical form He concluded that the R strain bacteria had some how been transformed by the heat killed s strain bacteria some tramforming principle transferredfrom the heat killed s strain had enabled the r strain to sysnthises a smooth polysaccharider coat and become virulent .This must be DUE to the transfer of the genetic material .However the biochemical nature of genetic material was not defined form his experiments They also discovbeed that proteindigensting ENZYMES (proteses) and RNA disgeting enzymes (RNases) did not AFFECT transformation so the transforming substancewas not a protein or RNAdisgestion with inhibit transformation suggestion that the DNA caused the transformation They concluded that DNA is the hereditary material but not all biologist were convinced . |
