1.

What do you mean by Absolute scale of temperature ?

Answer»

The lowest possible temperature of 0 K (-273.15˚C) at which a gas is supposed to have zero volume (and zero pressure) and at which entire molecular motion stops is called absolute zero of temperature. The temperature scale which starts with -273.15˚C as its zero is called Kelvin scale or absolute scale. The size of degree on Kelvin scale is same as that on celsius scale.

2.

The length of cold storage is double its breadth. Its height is 3 metres. The area of its four walls (including doors) is 108 m2. Find its volume.

Answer»

Given: Area = 108m2, Height = 3m

and Length of a cold storage is double its breadth

So, Let breadth of a cold storage = x

∴ length of the cold storage = 2x

Area of four walls = 108m2

∴ 2(l + b)× h = 108

⇒ 2 (x + 2x)×3 = 108

⇒ 6(3x) = 108

⇒ x = 108/18

⇒ x = 6

∴ Breadth of a cold storage = 6m

and Length of a cold storage = 2×6 = 12m

Hence, Volume of the cold storage = l × b × h

= 12 × 6 × 3

= 216m3

3.

Find:(i) the lateral surface, (ii) the whole surface, and (iii) the volume of a right circular cylinder whose height is 13.5 cm and radius of the base 7cm

Answer»

Given: Radius of base, r = 7cm

Height , h = 13.5cm

(i) Lateral Surface Area of right circular cylinder = 2πrh

= 2 x 22/7 x 7 x 13.5

= 2×22×13.5

= 594cm2

(ii) Total Surface Area of cylinder = 2πrh + 2πr2

= 2πr(h + r)

= 2 x 22/7 x 7 (13.5 + 7)

= 2×22×20.5

= 902cm2

(iii) Volume of cylinder = πr2h

= 22/7 x 7 x 7 x 13.5

= 22×7×13.5

= 2079cm3

4.

In a cylinder, radius is doubled and height is halved, curved surface area will be(A) halved (B) doubled (C) same (D) four times

Answer»

(C) same

Explanation:

Let the radius of a cylinder = r unit

Let the height of a cylinder = h unit.

According to question,

Radius is doubled = 2r

Height is halved = h/2

Then,

Curved surface area of a cylinder = 2 × π × r × h

And according to the above condition,

Curved surface area = 2 × π × 2 × r × h/2

= 2 × π × r × h

This is same as the curved surface area of the cylinder with radius r and height h.

Hence, option C is the correct answer.

5.

Write whether True or False and justify your answer. In a right circular cone, height, radius and slant height do not always be sides of a right triangle.

Answer»

Consider a right circular cone, with

Height = h

Radius = r

And slant height = l

We know, right triangle = one angle 90°

Using Pythagoras theorem in

⇒ l2 = h2 + r2

This justifies that height, radius and slant height of cone can always be the sides of a right triangle.

Hence, the given statement “in a right circular cone, height, radius and slant height do not always be sides of a right triangle” is true.

6.

In a cylinder, if radius is halved and height is doubled, then volume will be A) DoubledB) HalvedC) Four timesD) Same

Answer»

Correct option is (B) Halved

\(R=\frac r2\) and H = 2h

Then volume \(V=\pi R^2H\)

\(=\pi(\frac r2)^2\times2h\) \(=\frac{2\pi r^2h}4=\frac{\pi r^2h}2\)

Thus, volume will be halved.

Correct option is  B) Halved

What is the role of the innermost wall layer, the tapetum in the pollen sac? (a) Dehiscence (b) Safety (c) Nutrition (d) Mechanical

Answer»

The answer is (c) Nutrition

  • The wall of pollen sac comprises of four layers: Epidermis, Endothecium, Middle layers and Tapetum.
  • Epidermis is followed by a single layer of Endothecium, 2-3 middle layers and a single layer of Tapetum.
  • Tapetum is the innermost layer of the anther wall which completely surrounds the sporogenous tissue.
  • Epidermis is outermost layer and provides protection.
  • Endothecium develops fibrous thickenings at maturity and help in anther dehiscence.
  • Middle layers store reserve food materials.
  • Tapetum nourishes the developing pollen grains.
12.

How many meiotic divisions are required for the production of 100 pollen grains in the Pollen sac/pollen chamber? (a) 100 (b) 75 (c) 50 (d) 25

Answer»

The answer is (d) 25

  • Meiotic divisions are responsible for gamete formation.
  • Pollen grains are microscopic bodies that contain the male reproductive cell of a plant.
  • 1 Meiosis produces 4 pollen grains.
  • Therefore to produce 100 pollen grains, 25 meiotic divisions are required.
13.

Write the functions of the tapetum.

Answer»
  • Tapetum cells provide nutrition for developing pollen.
  • Besides this, the tapetum cells deposit sporopollenin substance and help in the formation of the epidermal coat of pollen.
  • The importance of tapetum can be understood by the fact that if the tapetum degenerates before the formation of pollen grains, the pollen grains remain sterile or abortive.
14.

What is Estrous cycle?

Answer»

Cycle:

  • It is exhibited by all eutherian mammalian females except the order -primate.
  • The mammalian females which exhibit one estrus cycle in one breeding season are called as monoestrous.
Example: Dogs, Fox, Bats, Deer etc.
  • The mammalian females which exhibit two or more oestrous cycles in one breeding season are called polyestrous.
Example: Rat, squirrel, cow, pig, horse, cat, sheep rabbit etc.
  • The oestrous cycle is studied with the help of vaginal smears.
  • The duration of various phases of the oestrous cycle varies from species to species. In the rat, it is from 4 to 5 days and in the rabbit is 16 to 17 days.

The oestrous cycle has 4 phases –

1. Diestrus phase:

  • It is also called as anestrus phase.
  • It is the longest phase & its duration is of 60 to 70 hours.
  • The ovary is without Graffian follicles.
  • The uterine gland is thin, small & inactive.
  • The vaginal smear shows leucocytes.
  • During the non-breeding season, the female remains in the diestrus phase.

2. Proestrus phase:

  • It is the smallest phase. Its duration is 1/2 to 5 hours.
  • There is no growth of ovarian follicles.
  • Vaginal smear exhibits epithelial cells.
  • The uterine glands begin to increase in number & size.
  • The thickness & contractability of the uterine wall begins to increase.

3. Oestrous phase:

  • Its duration in the rat is 9 to 15 hours.
  • It is also called a heat period.
  • The basal temperature of the body is increased.
  • Formation of Graffian follicles in the ovary.
  • The vaginal smear shows the presence of cornified cells.
  • The maximum level of estrogen in the blood.
  • Ovulation takes place.

4. Post-Estrus or metestrus phase:

  • Its duration is of 10 to 14 hours.
  • The vaginal smear shows cornified cells & leucocytes.
  • The maximum level of progesterone in the blood.
  • Formation of Corpus luteum in the ovaries.
  • If there is fertilization, the female remains in metestrus till the parturition.
  • The oestrous cycle repeats if there is no fertilization and after parturition.
