Solve : Computer restarts itself. (video included)?

Answer»

Hi.

It all started from computer restarting itself. It first I thought it was CMOS battery that was causing it because the system time was all the time wrong. I changed the CMOS battery and all I got was fixed system time but the restarts remained.
My mate told me that I might have some problems with HDD. So following his advice I ran checkdisk on the faulty HDD and during the 40 minute process it remapped like 5 bad sectors and on the fifth step: "verifying free space" it just fails. (Video below) After that I have to restart and the whole checkdisk thing goes on again. It's like a loop. (My PC still restarted if I managed to get to windows)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2ChoTs4cq8         (the video is somewhat dark, please watch in HD to catch the details)

So what are your suggestions? I need urgently HELP!Test hard drive with manufacturer's diagnostic tools:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287Okay. So I went to that webpage and downloaded the bootable ISO file. (It was the only thing I could choose because my computer does not have a floppy drive.) I followed every instruction, I burnt a bootable CD which worked fine in my computer, but it didn't WORK in the broken computer. It spun the CD in the cd drive but nothing happened. So I decided to swap HDDs so I could boot the CD in my computer and then CHECK the HDD I needed to.

But here's the problem:

http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/4684/p4092222222222222222222.jpg

What else can I do?Don't know why the bootable CD didn't work in only one of the computers.  Maybe you didn't set Boot Order to CD 1st?
Your good computer doesn't have an IDE (PATA) port?
I ALREADY got it and ran Seagate tools on that broken HDD. even seagate tools failed an important diagnostics test and it found like 100 bad spots while performing a long test.

Solve : question????

Answer»

I have a DELL latitude D600 laptop, but for some reason it will not turn on at all except when I plug it in the wall, but then it tries to turn on but turns off in a few seconds, the battery is dead and the jack in the back is REALLY touchy, could these the problem or will it work plugged in the wall at all? or do I need a new BATTERIE?I know you are new here (and welcome), but giving your post a SUBJECT title "Question" really doesn't make a lot of sense now, does it? EVERYONE here has a question. It would HELP if your subject related to WHAT that question is.

If I were you I'd try a new battery and see if that helps. Quote

If you can't get a new battery right away, you can run it plugged in without the battery.

Solve : No picture after bios?

Answer»
Ok, this is new to me. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501, I think it is running XP. When I turn it on I get the splash screen for Dell and can get into the bios by pressing F2. I can go through the bios, but once I exit, whether changes were made or not, the screen goes blank. The screen is still ACTIVE, when I shut it down using the power button I can tell when it is fully off by the difference in the screen. I connected it to an external monitor and got the same results. Bios is fine, F8 menu is fine (safe mode, etc...), but once anything is accepted I get the active black screen. I tried safe mode but also ended up with that active black screen.

This is a 6yr old laptop, could it just be age? What would prevent video, internal and external, but allow bios and boot menus?

I am losing enough hair naturally, any help is appreciated. You metioned trying safe mode. Do the same thing, but try VGA mode instead. If it works, then there is a problem with your graphics driver.Run Dell Diagnotics, F12 at BIOS.Thanks, I will try both and let you know. I left it in school, my bag was full of other stuff.Ok, I ran the diagnostics with F12 and the initial pass came up with no problems in the system. It is now running the rest of the tests and should be done in about 30 minutes. I will try the VGA mode after the tests have run.
Still no love from the laptop.

The tests ended and all passed, a box came up to boot into the diagnostic partition and I clicked it. That gave be a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. Sat there for a while and then restarted the machine with the power button. Went into VGA mode and have the same "live black" screen as when booting normally or into safe mode.

If it is the driver how can I update or roll it back if there is no screen to work with?

Any other ideas? Quote from: Kando on March 31, 2011, 09:58:54 AM

Since the diagnostics passed, it's probably not a hardware problem.  No, it's not a driver, since BIOS screen is VGA mode.  Could be a corrupted Windows install.  It's getting past the boot.ini to the F8 menu (which is still VGA), so at least it knows where the Windows install is located.  When the screen goes blank, is the hard drive running?  There's a small green indicator light.

Might have to perform a Repair Install:  http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Can you try any bootable CD?  It doesn't matter what, you only want to see if it boots & you have a display.  Don't forget to set boot order in BIOS to CD 1st.Ok, tried Ubuntu 10.10, fresh download and burn. I get an initial screen with what looks like a keyboard icon, a dash and a man in a circle. Then the screen that says UBUNTU 10.10 comes up. And finally the WHOLE screen turns a shade of white with random colored vertical lines. The cd cycles but nothing happens. Left it to sit for 30 minutes and the screen did not change. I was able to open the cd so Ubuntu never loaded. What now? I want to LEAVE the repair install for the very last option.Next step:  connect an external monitor. Quote from: Kando on March 30, 2011, 12:21:44 PM
I connected it to an external monitor and got the same results.

tried it.And ? ?And what? I connected it to an external monitor and got the same results. I could go on about the monitor and cable, but the end result is the same.

SOUNDS like the integrated video is failing- or possibly bad RAM.

-Integrated graphics aren't tested by any BIOS "system test" tests I know of, except for basic Text-mode functionality. higher-resolutions/color settings use more VRAM, in this case an integrated card uses system RAM so if it grabs some bad memory you'll see something like this as well.

Often with video card/chip failures you'll still get 80x25 text mode without issues, it's the higher resolutions that cause it to glitch. The best case scenario -aside from some missed connector issue- is probably bad memory at this point, since that can be replaced, whereas a failed video chip cannot (not cost effectively anyway). Undoubtedly the system test may have tested RAM so it's hard to say. (although you can double-check that with something like Memtest)

Also: a Repair install won't wipe your data if you do it properly, so there shouldn't be any reason to hold that until a last resort. But, if my suspicions are correct a repair install won't fix it because it is a hardware issue. Quote

Right.

EDIT: One eBay new warranty motherboard about $150 for the 1501. But IMO that is too much to pay to repair and older laptop.Thank you one and all, I will break the news to the owner.

Solve : I sometimes get a black screen when opening programs, windows, task manager etc.?

Answer»

So I bought a new computer, high end. AMD 6 core, Nvidia gtx 470, 8gb 1600 RAM, Thermaltake case w/ liquid cooling ..... Among other things (I don't know where to copy/paste all my system info from and I don't feel like typing all of it (other specs available on request)). So my PROBLEM is that occasionally, actually very seldom at all, I'll try to open a program and it will open fine except the screen will go black and I'll have to force SHUTDOWN. It happened 2 or 3 times when I launched the game Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, once when I pressed ctrl+alt+delete to get to task manager (there weren't any problems at the time, I just wanted to check my CPU performance). Then once when I was on the phone with Microsoft Tech Support. That time the guy was using remote access to VIEW my computer from where he was and right when I clicked the "Start Sharing" button it went black. I restarted and did the process again and it worked fine but clicking the button made my whole desktop the remote access black desktop (which is normal). It changed what the screen looked like, for lack of a better word. So I'm guessing that it's a graphical error related to my video card but I'm worried that if I send my computer in for repair then they won't be able to recreate the problem. If anyone knows of this problem and can be like "oh yeah, that happens because of this and that." Or "Yeah that's called the ... whatever."  That would be awesome. I just want to be able to reference something, like the name of a problem or be able to state the problem in a way where the tech support at the company that I'm gonna send it back to knows what to look for and how to find the problem other than just trying a bunch of irrelevant fixes that don't work and charging me for shipping. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Solve : PCI-E flexible riser card problems please help!?

Answer»

hey all,

i got a problem with a computer i am building and i am at a loss, i am hoping there is someone out there who can help

ok i have a Geforce GT220 graphics card, it goes in the PCI-e x16 socket and all is well, it works great. but it wont fit in the case, so i need a riser card. i had a 90 degree solid one, but its not high enough and bends the wrong way, but it does work great.

so i got a flexible one, and it moves the graphics card perfectly to where i need it, and the computer BOOTS up, but as windows is loading and i get the windows logo with the scrolling thing along the bottom, it just freezes and fully locks the computer.

i thought it was a cheap hongkong riser card, so i got another card. this one is much higher quality, it has big ground planes between the contacts, and each transmit line has its own capacitor, at both ends of the cable.

but still nothing. the computer boots fine all the way to windows when the graphics card is in normally, or at right angles. but when on either of the ribbon cables it freezes.

i tried modifying the graphics card so that it is powered from the power supply instead of the PCI-E socket, but that didn't work, so i am at a loss.

i need it to fit in this case so i can't get another. the graphics card is the smallest one i can find with HDCP so i have to use it.

any ideas? thanks! There's no reason any of those risers should work.  The PCI-Express Specification does not support their use.  So, since there is no spec for them, they may or may not work in your application. Quote from: Computer_Commando on April 05, 2011, 12:34:33 PM

 thanks for the reply.

why should they not work? what is the limits of the standard? i really need to get this card to fit otherwise i have to start from scratch. its a custom computer with custom case etc, and i will have to redesign everything if this doesn't work, which i just cant afford to do and it will have been months of work down the drain.

i would even go as far as to hand solder each wire to the graphics card and to the motherboard if it would fix the problem because that would be less work.

the cables seem to work with the graphics card for the first part, the graphics card comes on, the fan turns and i get the POST screen, then i get the windows logo, so its starting to boot the OS, but something happens during boot up ( the lights on the keyboard also all come on and then switch off at the same time it freezes) but it is just locking up.

i was hoping someone could give me some in depth detail about what the computer is doing at that point and why it is causing it to fail. if its a case of better shielding on the cables, or more power to the graphics card then i can fix that, but i need to be pointed in the right direction.

from what i understand people seem to be having the same problem using riser cards on high spec graphics cards. they all crash at the same point, and lower spec cards work fine.

any hints would be great, i really don't want to start from the beginning againYou should look at whats called "low profile" vid cards instead of using a riser card solution...

Or as i did recently gut the DARN thing and put it in an appropiate case...The only type that would have a chance of working is one like this:
http://www.logicsupply.com/products/pcie_101l_16

The leads (extension) must be very short.  If it uses a ribbon cable, it probably won't work.
Reason:  impedance can't be controlled, throws timing off (out of spec).

Soldering something will only make it worse. Quote from: patio on April 05, 2011, 03:32:18 PM

the Geforce GT220 1Gb is as low profile as i could find, but its still to high when sitting vertically,

and the problem is that the case is designed to fit in a small space, changing it isn't an option without going right back to the beginning, where i may as well buy a new motherboard with a HDCP compliant graphics card built in. Quote from: Computer_Commando on April 05, 2011, 05:12:04 PM

that is the right angle one i have, and it works but it is ANGLED the wrong way and is still too low.

the impedance shouldn't matter, if the signals are so limited that the traces need to be kept to an EXACT distance then graphics card companies are going to have real trouble when building the much larger cards. when the trace impedance becomes an issue everything must be fixed, like the way the memory is a set distance from the CPU, and memory sticks are a strict size. graphics cards differ hugely in size and so the physical traces are longer in bigger cards.

by rising the card up by maybe 2 cm, is no different than having a bigger graphics card.

Solve : Memory not recognized?

Answer»

Greetings to the Forum. I have a motherboard P4M800PRO-MV 1.0. It is not recognizing two memories 1 GB DDR 2-533 in any of the corresponding slots. No boot, as if it had no memory, unlike other reported problems identifying only 512 MB. I TESTED these memories, Markvision brand, and are perfect. I use two 512 MB DDR2, and the USER's GUIDE indicates you can use up to 1GB for each slot, giving a total of 2GB. My BIOS is updated. I would like a helping hand if someone has similar problem. Solve : Power Button not working??

Answer»

I unplugged everything from my motherboard (at the same time ) in an attempt to CLEAN up the inside of my case (cord clutter). As far as I can tell I seem to have plugged everything back in the way it was before but it won't turn on. The LED on my motherboard is lighting up so it's OBVIOUSLY getting power.

My motherboard is ASUS P8P67LE, case is Cooler Master HAF922, if it helps.Which means everything was working beforehand.
1. Do you have any recently added or CHANGES other than cleaning the CPU?
2. What components did you removed or reinserted(RAM,Video/Soundcard on slots, HD, PSU, power/cable connectors) while uncluttering?
3. Any unscrewing done?

Solve : How can I open the logo* that appears when I boot the computer??

*For the people who can't understand ''logo'', it's:
example: e for emachines system, acer for Acer one and IBM for Ibm one.

So, more strictly, how can I open a FILE that is present forever in the computer? You can't. It's not a "file". It's in the BIOS. If you want to CHANGE it, there are apps available, but you could kill your computer if you do things wrong or if it doesn't work properly.

is there any program witch can open the bios's files by any way?At your own risk...

Solve : Laptop Screen Malfunctioning?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I'm having a bit of a problem with the laptop I'm using at the moment. It belongs to my school though, so I can't do anything too crazy with it.

It's an HP Laptop, ProBook 4310s, and we were first given them about June of last year. And it's been mostly fine, I even USED it this morning, about 4 hours ago, and EVERYTHING was fine.

But I just turned it on, and it's been showing a blank white screen constantly. I plugged in another monitor, but the monitor didn't realize it was connected to anything. The rest of the computer works fine. I was able to sign in, but since I can't see the screen at all, there's not much schoolwork I can do.

Any idea what I can do? If you need more information, I'll do my best to supply it.

Thanks guys and gals.  Once you are SIGNED in, and have an external monitor connected, try locating the F-key that has a picture of a monitor with a line each side, or with twin monitors on it.

Judging by this picture of (supposedly) your keyboard...

That would be your F4 key.

So once Windows has fully loaded, and the external monitor connected, try PUSHING Fn+F4.
It may take up to 10 seconds to activate the secondary monitor.

If this works, it would seem you have either a damaged screen cable, or a damaged screen.

If not, then you are looking at a new laptop  You do not MENTION your operating system. If it is Win 7 then with your addon monitor plugged in to the external port press the "windows key on your keyboard and at the same time the "P" key. That will maybe bring up a choice of options on your desktop (if you get to have any) that will allow you to chose display only on the external monitor. Then see if you can maintain a display for an extended period of time.truenorth Quote from: truenorth on March 30, 2011, 02:18:23 PM

The OP Stated that they cannot see anything as the screen is white, Truenorth

Just to note ryann, you may have to press it more than once, however it should go like this:
(at start) Laptop (press) External (press) Laptop + External (press) LaptopOkay, well my operating system was Windows XP.

I have an external monitor on my desktop, and that didn't work after a while.

I talked to the IT People at my school (it is technically their laptop) and they said they would fix it.

But I think they're just replacing the monitor, not the computer itself, or fixing anything.
So I wouldn't call this problem solved, but solved for me anyways.

Thanks for your help though guys.  K, I had the impression that it "sometimes" did work but was not reliable from this comment by the O/P "And it's been mostly fine, I even used it this morning, about 4 hours ago, and everything was fine." Hence my suggestion. However seems to be a moot point now as the O/P seems to have recovered from (or soon to be so) with the help of his IT people.

Solve : P5w DH Deluxe Motherboard?

Answer»

hi I have a P5w dh deluxe motherboard and a Logisys 10-bay ATX Window case.
for some reason some of the screws don't seem to MATCH the motherboard on the case itself  and I feel this maybe a problem.
not sure if it well... Just asking

This is the type of motherboard i have for specs if you NEED to KNOW.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131025

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CS308RD&cat=CAS

note: The holes don't match up around the CPU only.... the REST is fine. I don't have a I/O fram from the case that will match the I/O port from the motherboard... if anyone know where to buy one that would be great
thanks so much guys Read these instructions:  http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/145
There are 9 mounting holes, none of them are around the cpu.  The holes around the cpu are for mounting the cpu fan.

You might have to move the standoffs on the case, they should just unscrew.ohh.. duh that right... i feel light a dum bell.

Thanks

Solve : No Display-Fans and lights turn on?

Answer»

Hi,
My original problem was my computer randomly shutting down without any error messages or anything like that, as well as not being able to turn it back on until after a while, seems like the longer I leave it turned off, the more time I get to leave it turned on before automatically turning off. Anyways so I decided to open up my computer and take out the heatsink and everything else out, and clean the dust off. After fully dusting off the computer I plugged everything back in and now the fans, and lights turn on, and the power supply fan slowly spins before finally spinning after a while. I get no display or any usb mouse LIGHT. I tried taking out the CMOS battery and then putting it back in, Also I get no beep when I take out the ram. I tried taking out the video card and plugging VGA unto motherboard. Also the hardrive, it spins so dont think its a hard drive issue.

When I took out the cpu it broke the thermal paste off, so I was wondering if that has to do with anything?
Also I am thinking if it might be the power supply and me needing more then 500 watts.

My Computer Specs:
Assus M3N78-VM
OCZ StealthXStream 500 watts P/S
OCZ 2x2gb DDR2 Ram
AMD Phenom x4 9600
Evga gtx 460 768 mb
Lg DVD Drive
Western Digital 1tb Black Edition
NZXT Guardian 921 case

Please Help!
Thanks.A quick read of your post indicates that you did NOT damage the power supply. You did something when you removed the heat sink. Check your work, but before you do anything, get some thermal paste. It does not cost much and is required when you take off the heat sink.
Yep, I am going to purchase thermal paste, one thing I heard that if I apply Arctic Silver 5 I could short circuit the cpu or motherboard if I put too much? Is it really to that extent? Just asking because the AMD technical support told me this is why they recommend silicone based paste.

Also, the reason I think it may be a power supply issue is because before I opened it up (and the reason for opening and cleaning everything) is because my computer kept turning off, and I had to WAIT a while before turning it back on and I also noticed that my power supply fan spins really slowly before finally spinning. Is it worth RMA'ing the power supply to OCZ to see if its working properly?Thats Bull what you've been told...

Thermal Paste Guide...If the power supply fans fails, the PSU will shut down from thermal overload. There is s heat sensor in the PSU. Failure of the fan does happen. Replacing the fan is easy to do. Replacement fans are cheap. Or take one out of a retired PSU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ddtAZ6AV7AThe slow PSU fan speed may be directly related to the CPU thermal shutdowns....
Yry the proper thermal paste info 1st...if it continues the same WAY then RMA the PSU...Ignore my post. I didn't relize it was under warrenty.
thanks for all your replies, one thing I was wondering was,if you guys think I should buy Arctic Silver 5 3.5g ($7) or Via 1.5G Thermal Grease silicone($3)? Just asking since I have never heard of the Via thermal paste, let me know, then I will just order one, and get back to you once I get the thermal paste and apply it.  Also is there a point of buying ArcticiClean 1 & 2 (not much, $5 or so). Arctic Silver makes a variety of thermal materials. No NEED to try a unknown maker.
You can save a few $ buying one of the other proven formulas.
Arctic Silver CMQ-2.5G Ceramique Premium High-Density  is very good and a small tube is about $2 or $3 from most vendors.
The AMD comment was about one specific compound,
- not about the Arctic Silver product line.
I know that, I mentioned that it was about Arctic silver 5,  The thing is I live in Canada, and theres shipping costs and 13% tax (no near store beside me sells thermal paste). I searched the other product lines but the Arctic Silver 5 was the cheapest one from the Arctic Silver line up after shipping costs. Anyways guessing I should just buy Arctic silver 5 then?Good choice. Read the instructions on their site.It only takes a little. My dad actually ended up buying me MX-002 (from instore), so had to cancel my online order. I applied the thermal paste to the cpu, so that gets rid of the thermal paste, also checked my work, and my brother checked it too, everything seems to be plugged in properly.

Is it possible to destroy the power supply if its trying to provide more power then it can, since my computer worked but when I got the video card,  like 2 or so days after the graphic card is installed, the computer kept turning off. Now it doesn't even show any display or anything.
I heard it might also burn the motherboard if the power supply can't supply enough power, is this actually true? Asking since it does make sense if its the motherboard as all fans turn on, that's plugged into the power supply but all usb,vga etc.. plugged unto motherboard don't work and I hear no beep when I take the ram out.

I think i might as well just rma some parts back, seems like the simplest way of fixing it, as I don't have any spare parts to know exactly what part is the problem. To determine if it's the PSU borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there...
Then we can move on to the other components...Sorry for the very late reply, but I rma'd back the motherboard and cpu and got them both back, for the cpu, it passed all tests for the motherboard they just replaced it, but I believe it passed the tests, and I am still having the same problem. I believe its the power supply. The reason why I think this is because of process of elimination and I also did the paperclip test, and it didn't spin, nothing did. Plus, the psu fan doesn't spin even when connected unto the computer, sorry don't have spare parts to swap. I also did a psu wattage calculator on different sites, and I would say it averaged out to something like 550 watts. I am thinking of just buying a new one,

Please give me your opinions, but if I do buy one, I was thinking of these two, and any others you guys may suggest in my price RANGE (under $100).

Current 2 I am thinking of:

Solve : Computer got startup problems?

Answer»

Hello. I've believe i've posted here before, but I'll try again.

Since the first time I turned on my computer (buildt it myself, with a friend, and a little help from my dad), I've had these annoying startup problems, which have led into bigger problems sometimes (sometimes required a format).

Every time I start up after a couple of hours with the computer turned off, the computer have been rebooting as soon as I can see the "STARTING Windows" screen. My options are "Launch Startup Repair" and "Start Windows Normally". Start WIndows Normally have been working sometimes, but I've also had to go into Startup repair, and do a restore. I've lost the count of how many times I've restored. Also Startup Repair terminated my password file, leaving me unable to access my computer. This required a reset/format.

I have tried everything I can. I've formated like 6 times in half a year, yesterday I switched for IDP mode to AHCI mode in BIOS, I took the RAM out and in, I've tried plugging out all the cables from the motherboard and plugged them in again, I've tried the Windows Memory Diagnostics(it's WIndows, so it wouldn't help anyway). Also my HDD failed cus of this problem once, had to buy a new one.

I am so tired of this problem, I just want to throw the computer off a cliff. Also EVERYTIME I take the computer with me to friends, or LANs, the computer gets a little worse than earlier that day. This is so annoying.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?
The processor is working.
The graphic card is working.
The HDD is working.
The RAM should be working, as the computer runs great when I get to turn it on.

Could the motherboard be the problem? I remember, when I built it, we took off a part that was needed for the processor to STICK to the motherboard. We hade to screw it back on, and it was as good as before. But maybe we touched anything we shouldn't touch at the motherboard? Should I try send it in to ASUS, my warranty will cover it.

Also I've tried installing another Windows. Did not help.

Thanks in advance.

See Above...I havent put on any cooling paste, there was some on the processor fan when I bought it. Also, when I was going to put it on, I had to take it off again for a sec, some of the paste went over to the processor, could this be a problem? Anyways, I can go check for some paste at the store. Thanks I'll write back here if it doesn't help. I am not home before sunday tho.

Solve : Secondary partitioned harddrive becomes "unformatted" after chkdsk /f /r?

Answer»

Hey everyone, i got quite a problem, a couple weeks ago, i turned on my computer like usual and oh surprise, my sec hd with it's 2 partitions are both "illegible", reading around i use chkdsk /F /r finding possibbly damaged clusters. after the next reboot, both partitions are now "unformatted", how do i recover all those files? i've been reading up on testdisk, easeus partition doctor and spinrite, but i still got my doubts

System: WINDOWS XP SP31) Try Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva)
2) No need for the /f switch - the correct command is chkdsk /r (the /r switch assumes the /f switch)uh...i already did the chkdsk thing, it netted me with both partitions showing up as "unformatted"Yes I know. I was just saying that for future reference the correct command is chkdsk /r. For now, you want to try Recuvawell, i could finally try recuva today, netted me a "Corrupt MFT" ERROR, ADD to that, the DISK went back to being "illegible" and asking me for some sort of "serial number".

Solve : Upgrading RAM: Crucial Says 2.6V RAM, but I Have 2.5V RAM?

Answer»

I have a HP Media Center PCm1180n, with an Asus PTGD1-LA mobo, with 4 DIMM slots supporting 184 pin, DDR SDRAM (PC3200) RAM.  I'm running Windows XP, 32-bit.

Full specs here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00255702&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&site=null&key=null&product=432781

I wanted to upgrade to 4BG of RAM (4x1GB) - which I realize 32-bit Windows XP won't fully recognize.

Using CPUID's CPU-Z, I determined my current RAM runs 2.5V.

However, Crucial RECOMMENDS RAM that runs 2.6V: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Media%20Center%20m1180n

As I do NOT have a mobo that supports manually adjusting RAM voltage, will I be able to use RAM that runs 2.6V?

Will it actually run the RAM 2.6V or instead still run it 2.5V?  Or will the mobo automatically adjust?

THANKS!

***My reason for posting a new topic is the fact that other topics involve people that have the ability to manually adjust voltages - and I do NOT have that ability.***The recommended voltage specified by the RAM MANUFACTURER is the voltage at which they are satisfied that the module will be stable and perform as advertised. Very often the voltage supplied by the motherboard/PSU will fluctuate slightly above and below the nominal figure (in your case 2.5 volts). Anyhow, if Crucial recommend that module for your motherboard, and noting that it SAYS "Guaranteed-compatible memory upgrades for your HP - Compaq Media Center m1180n Desktop/PC." at the top of the page, I WOULD just go ahead.

I am working on a Dimension 3000 and the sound is not working. This is what I have done:
Replaced the speakers with small usb powered units that are known working
Re-installed the audio drivers from Dell(Legacy audio and Soundmax Integrated)
checked all settings in CP/device mgr
This is an XP HOME os with 1 gb ram. It does not play music from the cd or systems sounds, but I do hear a hiss from the speakers when I increase the volume.
BTW, it does not have a sound card, just the mb pci
Thanks Did it work before and on what set of speakers?

Replaced the speakers with small usb powered units

Have you tried USING amplified computer speakers and hooking it on line-in jack(usually lime green)?
You COULD also check for the documentation of your PC or by SEARCHING online for the manual of the particular model. The original speakers were amplified and used to work, but I don't have any history since it is a FAMILY member's system...of course I plugged them into the green port...lolWhat you should have tried first is using the same type of speakers maybe borrowing one to test the audio port instead of a usb powered speakers.

Solve : Constant CTDs after installing new CPU?

Hello there!

I hope someone can help me with this. I replaced my AMD Phenom II X2 with an Phenom II X4 965 BE a few days ago and I am noticing a considerable performance boost, however I am plagued with very frequent CTDs ever since doing so. I thought it might be a cooling issue, but even though I do run a hot 70C at most during games like Rift, I'll get a CTD MERELY opening Call of Duty Black Ops, or shortly thereafter during gameplay or selecting a server while Core Temp is displaying a temp of 37C. I've also had problems with Rift and Dragon Age 2 since installing the new CPU. I have updated all my drivers and used MSI LIVE Update for my BIOS. I don't get any info from the error message other than the program has stopped working and windows will notify me if there's a solution (yeah right).

I have attached a txt document spit out by CPU-ID that should have everything you NEED to know about my computer setup and more.

Solve : USB Cord?

Answer»

I need to connect a comercial DVR to a computer VIA USB, A connection from a Port on the DVR to a port on a computer. Therefore I need a USB connecting cord. I see in catologs and on line USB cords with a  type A connector on one end and a  type B connector on the other end. What does type A and Type B mean ? Do they fit into either port and are the INTERNAL connections the same?Yes, USB connections have standards, A, B, Mini, Micro and a few other lesser known ones.

From your description, The cord you have SEEN is one of these:

Any local computer shop should sell them for under $10. Just ask them for a USB male A to USB male B connector
Or e-bay, or other local online auction site.

Is this the connector your DVR uses? Thanks Kurtiskain, that was very informative and clear.   I also just ordered the computer desk top encylopedia that you used in your ILLUSTRATION. Problem solved!!!The USB type A and B connectors were the original standards, and the most common types.  However with the minis and MICROS, mostly used by cameras and MP3 players, there seems to be LITTLE standardization so you need to be careful if buying a cord for them.  Some of the minis and micros that look identical from a distance don't fit into the jack.

But when I CONNECT it to my pendrive, card reader and recently my portable drive, nothing comes out. Not even a BUBBLE saying 'Windows could not detect this driver'. As if I did not connect anything. Is there a problem with my computer?Does the drive work on other systems?I didn't TRY it with other system yet but I tried with other computer (also Windows 7) but they can't detect it either. For the first few days I get my portable drive, things were working just fine. When I asked if you tried it with another system that meant did you try it with another computer. If it doesn't work on more than one computer there is something wrong with the device.

hello. i am new here and I just need your help.I BOUGHT a nice case south-pak(dot)com and transferred everything I need to transfer. The first day of using it was great. The next day, I wasn't able to use my desktop SINCE I was out.  I turned it on yesterday, but it won't START. I don't know what happened. Got so many important files there. It worked fine the first time I used it. Can someone tell me what happened or any idea about it? It is unclear whether you got a whole new computer and transfered the files or if you just got a new case. If you just got a new case, check to make sure that the motherboard has standoffs so it is not pressed up against the metal of the case. When you turn it on, do any fans start spinning? Does the screen COME on?
If you got a whole new desktop computer did you reformat and reinstall windows or just put the drive from the old one?

Solve : External Hard Drive Problem - "Please insert a disk into drive _:"?

Answer»

I was using my external HD to backup data from my laptop (I plan on doing a system recovery).  The HD had originally been hooked up to my PC with no problems.  A few minutes in, the transfer STOPS and I get a message that the drive is not ready.

Now when I try to access the hard drive from either the PC or the laptop I get a message that says "Please insert a disk into drive (letter of the drive):".  Something I noticed, not sure if it's relevant, is that originally the HD was (G:) on the PC.  When I connected it to my laptop, the drive was recognized as (F:).  After I got the error and connected it back to the PC the HD was recognized as (F:), same as the laptop but different than it originally was on the PC.

I'm RUNNING XP Home on both the PC and laptop.

Can ANYONE please help?I may be mistaken, but I UNDERSTAND, that external HD will work only with the computer on which it was created.
Have that external HD ever worked? Is it genuine external HD, or internal with enclosure?SOUNDS like it was unplugged without using Safely Remove Hardware...
Right click My Computer and select Manage...
From there choose Disk Management and right click the offending drive and select Properties...
Does it say RAW ? ?I got the same problem with my external HDD, when i try to open it, it show the massege "please into disk drive D: ".... please help meHow do they find these old threads?

I've checked that the card is properly connected to the motherboard already. To note, when I try to install the LATEST graphics drivers which I've downloaded from the manufacturer's official site, I receive this: "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware."

Before I can get the new card to work, I presume I will have to uninstall the onboard one (Intel R G33/G31 Express Chipset Family)?

My new graphics card is:

No, old or unused drivers never have to be uninstalled.  However, you may have to set primary graphics card in BIOS (CMOS Setup), F1 at power up (Compaq splash screen).  It should say "Onboard" & "PCI" under one of the menu items.

Solve : Video issues with a new laptop?

Answer»

Hi all.  I bought a new laptop in Nov of LAST year.  ASUS N61JQ-A1 as fol:

CPU - i7 - 720QM
VGA - ATI HD 5730 (1GB)
8GB DDR3
Windows 7 Premium

Every once in a while, my screen "pixilates".  I don't know how else to describe it.  I took a VIDEO and posted it on youtube.  I have run multiple virus SCANS etc using AVG 2011, Malwarebytes and Spybot and have found nothing.  A reboot always seems to FIX it.  Does this look like a failing vid card?  Many thanks.  Video is here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDCuwhuO6UQyour laptop is still under warranty, isn't it?  Oh yeah...still under warranty.  Bought extra on top of the 2 year.  Any IDEA what it is? Quote from: DaBooch on April 10, 2011, 12:41:18 PM

Solve : Upgraded new PC, mouse lag and grinding noise?

Answer»

I recently bought a new PC. A Dell Ispiron 560 (3.2 ghz, 4gb memory, Windows 7, DUAL core.). I don't want to get big into gaming on it I just wanted a better video card than the crappy one that came with it, so I bought a HIS HD 4670 IceQ 1gb ($60). Because of that I had to upgrade the PSU from a stock 150w to a OCZ Fata1ity 550w power supply. I uninstalled the previous video drivers by going into Device Manager and deleting them. I also used Driver Cleaner Pro. Then I installed and updated the driver for the HIS 4670. Now my computer seems to have minor mouse lag and the cursor plays catch up to where I want it to go. Also while playing some minor games (ex. A.V.A.,Genesis AD, TheHunter, Vindictus) it lags horribly and makes a grinding sound which comes through the speakers, it does this not only in a game but I can be surfing the web and listing to itunes and it will just spazz out making the grinding sound. Any help? Did I screw SOMETHING up?

I tried looking around on Google, but there were no resovled issues. Some were saying it could be a bad PSU or that there is a conflict with Micrsoft High Definition Audio Dirver.

Added:
I am getting really frustrated with this, I'm 99% sure it is through the speakers. I took out the HIS 4670 and went with the stock video card and it was still doing it, so I thought maybe it might have something to do with the power supply so I switched it back to the 150w one. The lag and noise still continues to happen I don't know what to do at this point. Everything is LIKE it was when I got the computer. Could I have a virus/malware or something of that sort, or maybe it is the HDD. Quote

I uninstalled the previous video drivers by going into Device Manager and deleting them. I also used Driver Cleaner Pro
Was this the instructions that came with the new video card?
I din't think so.
You may have to roll and start over.
You have a Dell Ispiron 560. Did you try the Dell site for any information about possible compatibility issues using HIS HD 4670 IceQ 1gb ?

I have nothing good to say about 'drive cleaner pro'. Windows is able to install drivers without the need to fourth party software.

No persona experience with HIS HD 4670. A few people COMPLAIN about it, but that may be expected for a high end product now selling at a bottom price.

And yes, conflict with audio and video devices is an old story. It is almost always because of not properly installing drivers.

As you well know, you have to be very carefully about the physical installation.
If so, this You Tube video is not for you, but for others.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPB_uY00_yg
Thank you for your reply. You are right, those were not the instructions, I just read in many places that you should uninstall the old graphics card drivers and then install the new drivers for the new card. How would I roll & start over? I read many different responses about the graphics card before I bought it. Here are two that I could find right now:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/p/19344101/19741285.aspx#19741285
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/p/19316698/19635806.aspx#19635806
Ok, so no Driver Cleaner Pro - Understood.
I looked alot around YouTube and such sites about how to install the PSU & the graphics cards so I understand how to carefully physically install them. Like I said I removed the new 550w PSU and the 4670 and am now back to the original hardware and it was still doing it while playing through Morrowind. If there is something with the drivers, then I don't know how to restart the process and get it right. I would like to have it not lag and make sounds on the original hardware, without the new graphics card and PSU, before I try installing them.To use that card you have to have at least 300 watts more or less. The 150 watt is not enough. So put the PSU back in, but let's start with the original Video card. Boot it up in safe mode with VGA.

It should work OK in safe mode VGA and the original Video card.
Now check and see if you can go back to a point in system recovery before you installed the drivers. If so do it and re boot.  Normal boot. At this point expect the audio to be back.

Next do whatever the instructions said for the new video card. It varies and I don't know what it is for that card.

Sometimes they say install the new drivers before you put in the new card. Others say remove the old drivers first using the hardware manager. What does it say in your instructions?
I think I going to exchange/return it or might just build me a computer.

These seem like some pretty decent deals, that out beat this Dell I have for around the same price give or take $100. What do you think?

Solve : My computer "turns on," but nothing happens?

Answer»

Alright, this'll likely be a long post, so I apologize now.

I have a Dell Inspirion E1505 laptop that I received new in December, 2006.  I've used the computer mostly for school, only in the last year using it for gaming - World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Alien Swarm mainly.  For at least a year now, my computer needed to be plugged into the power cord for it to even work.  About a month and a half ago my power cord finally went out, so I bought a new power cord via Dell's website, it arrived in a few days, worked perfectly and I haven't had a problem with the power cord since.

Meanwhile, my battery was still crap and would get really hot if I had my computer on for more than an hour.  About a week ago, my sister was going to use my computer.  When she hit the power button, nothing happened.  Normally when I start up my laptop, a series of lights come on.  Three of these lights are the power light, the battery light, and the battery charging light.  When the computer actually turns on, the first two will light up.  However, when my sister tried to turn my laptop on, only the power light came on.  It appeared to me that the battery was so out of juice that no power was reaching it at all.  I figured a new battery would FIX the problem.

So I again went to Dell's website and I ordered a new battery for my laptop.  It arrived on Tuesday and I charged it up to full power.  I turned on my computer and everything worked; I figured my problem had been fixed.  However, ten minutes after this, my SCREEN suddenly goes black and I am unable to do anything.  I cannot see even my mouse.  I force a power down on my laptop, wait a couple minutes, then turn it back on.  The same problem my sister had encountered also happened to me; the power light comes on, but the screen remains entirely black and the battery-in-use light remains unlit.

From here, I'm not sure what to do.  I don't know if maybe I fried the power source in my computer.  I'm thinking that this may be an issue that requires me to send my computer off to get fixed.  Even if it is, I would like some idea as to what may be the issue so I know how much it'll cost to fix.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!A 2006 model laptop isnt worth putting much money into, especially if it was a cheap model then. New laptops can be bought for between $400 and $600 these days which would play those GAME titles with no problem as long as the GPU is decent. I got a toshiba satellite laptop for $429 running windows 7, 4gb ram, 500gb hd, and ATI GPU for gaming. Plays WoW and Guild Wars with no problems.

Most computer shops start at $100 just to diagnose, then labor + parts after that. Some places even if they cant fix it will charge you a fee to diagnose it and then hand you back a dead computer and a bill for $100 as a local HP/IBM/Toshiba certified repair center does.

So my suggestion is to see what other computers are out there if you can afford to buy one. If you cant afford a new computer then, you could take a chance to try to get it working again with a local repair shop or dell repair by mail service, but a 2006 model will probably be suggested to you to just replace it with a new computer as for parts may be obsolete for it.Did you ever find out what was happening to your computer?  I am having the same thing happen-  and of course, just went out of warranty. He made 1 post, 8 months ago; he's not going to answer.  Start your own thread & provide all details.

Solve : Laptop screen goes black?

I have an HP n5415 running Windows xp HOME. Just recently the screen on the laptop would just go black, with no warning or error. The laptop does not turn off I can HEAR and see that the HARDDRIVE is doing its thing, the lights are still on, I can OPEN the cd drive, etc. I have tried to hook it up to the desktop monitor and it does the same thing. I can not run any anti virus software because it goes black to quickly. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks BillDoes the screen malfunction before windows loads?
If you go into BIOS, does it do the same thing? Some times I see the windows logo, other times is does not get that far. I can get into the bios sometimes and it has gone black while I was in it.Have you checked your power saving options in BIOS?No how do I do that? All BIOS screens are DIFFERENT. You use the arrow keys to navigate through the various menus. Your BIOS might look something like this:

Notice the Power Management option?

Or maybe it looks more like this:

Do you see the Power option at the top of the screen?
Find this in your BIOS and disable sleep mode. It may say something confusing like S1 or S3 mode. Just disable the power saving options and see if that helps you at all.I look in the bios under the power tab. There were two things listed.
1. enable/disable docking options
2. speed steps ?
Nothing anywhere said anything about sleep mode.Anyone else have some thoughts or ideas that may help me? Thanks for your time. Bill Quote from: GotWoodzy on January 08, 2009, 09:06:46 PM

Solve : Upgrading PC with latest configuration?

Answer»

I am upgrading my PC.  Please suggest me latest motherboard and processor.  I have budget of 10-12K for this (motherboard + processor).
I have 22" FULL HD lcd monitor, So I would like to play HD movies and high graphics games as well.  If required I will purchase graphics card. Suggest me the graphics card as well. I can spend further 5-6K for graphics card as well.
So my total budget for motherboard + processor + graphics card is 15-18K. Please suggest me right configuration. Quote

I have budget of 10-12K

That seems like a lot in terms of US dollars. What currency is that?

Quote
Please suggest me latest motherboard and processor.

If you want to go with AMD, then the latest processor is the Phenom II X6 1100T BLACK Edition. NOTE: When buying AMD processors, look for the "Black Edition" ones because that means that it can be overclocked.
With Intel, it would be the Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition.

For the AMD processor, this is a GOOD board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131644
For the Intel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131614

Suggest me the graphics card as well.

Look here and decide: http://videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.htmlThanks for reply.

The currency is in INR (Rupee). So probably I can spend max 6000/- RS for processor, max 6000/- RS for motherboard and if required 5000/- RS for graphics card.

I am still searching for best solution. Eagerly waiting for your replies. Quote
I am still searching for best solution.

You looked at the links?Yes, but it's little high in budget.
I will be using this combo for PLAYING HD movies and graphic games. This may not be in regular use. So I don't want to spend too much on this.
I can spend max $200-$250 for motherboard + processor.
Again I may require to spend for graphic card as well. While I was typing my post timed out, so I have to retype. Hold on. Quote
can spend max $200-$250 for motherboard + processor.

Ok, then you should look at the AMD Phenom II X2 duel core processors. They are very affordable and you don't really need a quad core processor if you are not a hard core gamer. The reason why I said the duel core Phenom instead of the duel core ATHLON is because sometimes you will be lucky and can unlock three cores on the Phenom.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103887

For the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128469

You shouldn't need a graphics card because the onboard is good enough for HD Video.

Solve : Using TV as PC Monitor Please Help?

Answer»

Hello,
I have an older Dell notebook with Windows XP and recently hooked up my new flatscreen TV as the monitor using a monitor cable with audio. It was great! The computer screen was black and the TV was the monitor.  But now, it won't work that way. The TV becomes a second monitor with only the desktop picture, no icons, etc. and the computer monitor stays on.
I have tried changing the display settings, which are very limited, not what is on all the internet "How Tos", and I tried system restore to go BACK to whatever settings the computer had before.  Nothing helps.
How can I get the TV to be the primary monitor again?  (all I did before was connect the cable to the computer and the TV and it worked fine.)

Display settings show 1. Multiple Monitor and 2. Plug and Play (no other options). I tried enable and disable on both. I tried making screen 2 the default screen.  The "Advanced" tab only shows properties and DRIVER. When I right click on the icon screens 1 & 2, both have the Primary and Attached options greyed out. (i can't change them)

I tried using the Function Keys but it only makes lines across the TV screen.
Please help if you can.
Stella Quote from: Anyname on April 10, 2011, 07:23:45 PM

When I right click on the icon screens 1 & 2, both have the Primary and Attached options greyed out.

Do you see this after you've connected the TV, or even when the TV is not connected?  Try changing the settings when it isn't connected to the TV.  My brother had issues connecting his PC to his flatscreen, but in his case it was due to the PC's onboard video card not being able to handle the TV's higher resolution.Yes, it is the same with or without the connection.  When I try to move screen #2 over to the other SIDE of screen #1, a pop-up window says, if I enable this moitor, it will be used as part of the desktop, and I can move icons onto it, etc.

If I knew what the settings were when it worked the first time, I would try to go back to that.  System Restore didn't work either.
I changed the (Multiple Monitors on Dell) to (Default Monitor) somewhere else on the computer and disabled the 2nd screen but it changes itself back.  Try Fn-F5 on laptop.  Not sure if F5, but one of the "hot-keys" should turn it on and off.I got the Function Key to work now, but that doesn't change Screen #2 into the Primary Screen.
"Windows Help" says to click on Screen #2 and CHECK the box that says "Make this the Primary", but that option is grayed-out.  Whether it is connected or not, enabled or not, turned off or on, the option is not available. Something is causing it to be grayed-out.  Was the TV powered on before the computer? That is the answer!!!
The TV has to be powered on 1st and then quickly use the Function Key on the computer, because the TV will turn itself off if it doesn't get a reading from the computer right away.
I also had to change the screen resolution on the computer.
It is working great now.
Thanks so much for all the help.

Solve : Two separate Hard drives....?

Answer»

I considered myself somewhat tech SAVVY, built 3 PC's....but never encountered this problem, due to my lack of knowledge, of course.

I decided to build a new i7 Pc which includes a Solid State Drive (64G) and an additional 1TB HD.

The idea was to have windows 7 and a couple of games on the SSD and everything else would be on the HD. How do I get both drives to work separately and can it even be done??? I don't know much about raid but from what I read I guess it wouldn't work. Not sure how to go about it.

Thx in advance. You can get more help with more information about the system you want to build. Do you already have the parts?

The following is a personal opinion. Based on your question, you still lack some experience. Before you try SDD and very large drives, may I suggest you buy two 500 GB data drives. Get the system up with one drive. And next test the second drive by making a 'clone' of the drive. Next, do some research or RAID. You can get very high performance with two SATA drives in a RAID. But you have to proceed carefully to get it right.
Without knowing what SDD you rethinking about, I would say wait until you have more hands on with RAID. At the present TIME, IMO, RAID gives you better performance for you dolor. SSD presently is suited for industrial applications where price is not a concern.

(FYI: Some 1TB drives are junk. IMHO.)

Here is a link with some information you might want.

Quote

everything else would be on the HD

I am wondering exactly what is meant by this. You need to have one drive or partition to hold the "system"; this will be where the OS is installed. Also by default programs that you install will go here in \Program Files and \Program Files (x86).  64 GB should be fine for Windows 7 and a great deal more than just "a couple of games". For example I have a 500 GB drive with a 100 GB system partition with a mature (1 year old) installation of Windows 7 with a lot of programs and 2 users with My Documents etc totalling about 10 GB and the whole lot takes up around 45 GB. This includes an XP Mode VM with a 5 GB (at the moment) dynamic virtual drive. I also have another 400 GB partition on that drive for stuff like multimedia, my digital photography and video collection, and another 250 GB drive for downloads and VMWARE virtual machines.

They "work separately" perfectly fine without any RAID arrangements. I am not sure what you mean by this too.

You really want to put your Windows swap file onto the drive that has spinning platters to avoid wearing out the SSD.

For more about RAID, here is a simple  outline...

Solve : Acer Laptop sleep problem?

My acer laptop has been restarting everytime I resume from sleep mode, giving me the your system has not shutdown properly error.  Now I've been googling around and i think i've found the problem with the ACPI settings.  Problem is I can't change them in the BIOs because Acer limits it.

in step 3 of this i can see my acpi mode is s3 but entering the acer bios gives no options at all to change anything really.  Is there a way to change it to s1 and s3? because sleep is not working in s3.  thanks in advance.

Solve : Reusing old CPU on new motherboard?

Answer»

I have a socket LGA 775 CPU I want to remove from a motherboard that doesn't work anymore and use it again on a new motherboard.

I know I will have to reapply thermal paste, is there anything else I should look out for? How hard is it to remove the cooling fan? I remember it snapped into place pretty tight.   Reuse anything you can.  You just want to insure that the new motherboard supports the old CPU.  EVERY motherboard has a list of supported cpu's.Okay, thanks.Since both are LGA-775, you can't hurt anything by trying.  It might not POST.  Of course, you need to install the cooling fan and connect the power lead.I don't have a motherboard yet, just wanted to see if reusing the CPU was feasible before I even looked. I put together the motherboard/CPU so I'm comfortable doing that, but I have never taken one apart.      You can look up the details of the cpu here:  http://www.cpu-world.com/
Other than the socket type, bus speed, multiplier, etc is what DETERMINES if motherboard supports it.
Thanks, that is a very helpful link.Just a follow up if anyone is interested-

I ordered a cheap new socket 775 motherboard (ECS GT1T-M7) from Tiger DIRECT and replaced the (suspected) bad old board, reusing the old CPU and cooling fan and just reapplying new thermal paste. My suspicions were correct, the problem was the old motherboard. Everything is up and running fine now.

Solve : Fast new computer running slow on games.?

Answer»

Hey, recently my father purchased a new computer and when EVER I try to play games on it, it preforms very poorly. This computer should be ABLE to run games better than my older computer, but it does not. All the parts in this machine are by far better than mine, yet it runs slow, and its new. When I set a game's graphics settings such as starcraft 2, it recomends I use low graphics and a low resolution. However on my older computer I can run that game near ultra and on a decently high res. I'm not sure what the problem is, now since i updated all the drivers for my graphics card, but it stills run very slow in games. The graphics card is a Ati radeon HD 5450. Anyone know how to fix this, or is the graphics card just not that great. Right now the desktop runs at 1920x1080.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Putting it bluntly, the graphics card is crap, it is not much better than onboard graphics.
ONE thing you could try is to check if you have the latest drivers for this card. Quote from: alan2273 on February 06, 2011, 01:56:26 AM

Of COURSE it isn't, since it is on-board.yeah I thought it might be no good, better break the bad news to my dad. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 06, 2011, 09:33:15 AM

CONSIDERING that you can purchase a 5450 PCiE card, and the OP mentioned a graphics card in his post, how do you come to the conclusion that it was onboard graphics. This could be due to 1 of 2 things,

Either the video card is something like 256MB and the game your wanting to play requires more, or
the CPU(Processor) cant handle the load and you need a better one. Quote from: alan2273 on April 15, 2011, 12:17:42 PM

What's the deal with Intel Xeon Processors?

They COSTS lots of money, have good performance reviews and have lots of cache. But that's it. Other than that I can't really see any stats that make them worth the money or explain the performance."...targeted at the non-consumer server, WORKSTATION and embedded SYSTEM MARKETS..." So you're saying that they're just OVERPRICED CPU's for business's?

You are saying that you intentionally created a short circuit & now you're wondering why the computer is no longer WORKING.  Genius!!!i didnt do it intenionally i did it by mistake i didnt knw it would cause tht ?! So plz tell me wht to do im really worried For starters unplug the wire you changed in the PC and replace the fuse in the plug (the one that goes to the power outlet). Unless the PSU has internally fused in which case that's also dead.

(Are they still called plugs in the US?)

... when i turned it on it made this peep sound...

Just one short peep or multiple peeps or one long one?

At the very least your USB controllers is fried, you would have to replace with expansion card USB's. Most probably though your motherboard (the largest circuit board) is ruined.for the peep sound it made multiple of peeps i dont think its the power supply cuz when i plug the power cable in the wall outlet a little metal piece on the mobo gets hot so i think its gettting some electricity .... And for the usb part i meant  on the mobo there is this place where there metal vertical wired going out so u can plug the usb cables instead i put a power supply cable and then when i press the power it doesnt open and also when i removed this cable tht i plugged and i press the power it doesnt work also i just wanna knw if like i can fix it or can someone else fix or i hv to buy a new one :SJust an educated guess but it's beyond repair if you ask me... Sorry I'm still trying to get my head around what EXACTLY you did. I think that you are saying that you plugged one of the power connectors from your PSU into something you shouldn't. What I don't understand though is how? All the connectors are shaped so that you can't plug them into anything they shouldn't be.

As for the beeps, I was just curious to know what the original problem was, probably just a loose or faulty stick of RAM by the sound of it.

Solve : HP Pavilion dv9205us Notebook PC won't start after Microsoft Update?

Answer»

A friend asked me to help with a computer issue. We upgraded Microsoft yesterday. It failed to start immediately after.

HP Pavilion dv9205us NOTEBOOK PC running Vista (not sure of the SP)
Microprocessor   1.6 GHz AMD Turion ™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-50
Microprocessor Cache   2 X 256KB L2 Cache
Memory   1024MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Video Graphics   NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 (UMA)
Video Memory   up to 288MB (shared)
HARD DRIVE   120GB 5400RPM (SATA)
Multimedia Drive   LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
Display   17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)

When I press POWER the control panel lights up and the fans activate. The computer stays on for about 25 or 26 seconds, powers down for 1.5 seconds and repeats.

I power cycled the laptop and tried to boot WITHOUT an AC power source.
I tried booting without the battery.
I tried booting with 1 stick of RAM at a time.
I disconnected all peripherals from the mobo and started the laptop.
I tried to boot from a Windows DVD.
I tried to play a movie.

In all of the methods I described there was no change from the original activity I described. There was no beeping, and no lights flashing or changing colors (as I have been able to make happen for other dead mobos). No indication of anything.

Did I mention we installed a microsoft upgrade yesterday? haha.
